Police say a father shot his 4-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son to death before turning the gun on himself Thursday in their south Chandler home.
Robert Louis Roberts, 43, killed his two children, Michael and Carleigh, Thursday, then fatally shot himself, police said.
Detectives searched the home in the 1100 block of West Canary Way, northwest of Alma School and Queen Creek roads in the Clemente Ranch subdivision. Employees of a nearby day care the children attended called their mother on Thursday morning saying the children hadn't shown up, said Sgt. Rick Griner, a Chandler police spokesman. Roberts was supposed to drop them off. The mother then called Roberts' workplace and learned he hadn't arrived.
Griner said the mother went to Roberts' home and found the door locked and his silver four-door Honda outside, then called police. Officers forced entry and discovered the double murder-suicide at 1:20 p.m.
Roberts and his wife were married but separated and were having marital issues, Griner said. Roberts was caring for the children Wednesday night when the mother last had contact with them, he said.
Police do not believe there is any outside involvement.
Roberts has had suicidal issues involving police in the past, according to court records.
