Six years ago, Alicia Kozakiewicz says she was just a normal 13-year-old girl. That all changed on New Year's Day 2002. Today, she recounted for Congress how an online sexual predator befriended her in an Internet chat room, then kidnapped her, drove her across state lines and locked her in a cage in his basement, where he beat her, tortured her and raped her.

"I cry inside. I mourn for that child that was me. The child that was stolen from me. Make no mistake -- that child was murdered. I know now that some parts of me are forever there. The child that I was is still chained in that room, still suffering."

Kozakiewicz warned the House Judiciary Committee of the widespread dangers of Internet sex crimes.

"The boogey man is real. And he lives on the Net. He lived in my computer -- and he lives in yours," she said, looking at the lawmakers. "While you are sitting here, he is at home with your children."

Kozakiewicz was rescued by FBI agents. She is now a 19-year-old college sophomore. Scott Tyree of Herndon, Va., was convicted of the crime and is serving a 20-year prison sentence. Not only did he beat, torture and rape Kozakiewicz, he also posted online pictures of her taken while she was locked in his basement. continued: »

Suspect Scott Tyree: 'A classic long-haired computer guy'

post-gazette.com - By Dennis B. Roddy and Jon Schmitz - January 05, 2002

Those who knew him, or thought they did, described Scott W. Tyree as a classic computer geek: waist-length hair tied into a ponytail, blue jeans and T-shirts as business attire, a body that looked as if it hadn't seen a gym in a while. continued: »

Excerpt: When police searched his Herndon, Va., townhouse yesterday, they found 13-year-old Alicia Kozakiewicz, bound and missing since New Year's Day. They also found materials relating to bondage and sado-masochistic materials.

Last night, FBI agents removed several computers and other equipment from his townhouse.

Tyree, 38, was arrested while on the job for the Herndon, Va., office of Computer Associates International, a software engineering firm whose Web page includes a link to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Tyree had moved to the high-tech corridor of suburban Washington, D.C., in 1995 after knocking about in the quick-turnover world of Silicon Valley, where a succession of employers were gobbled up by larger firms.

He married at 20, was amicably divorced before 30, and gave no foreboding of the bizarre events that were to punctuate his life.

"I'm utterly, completely shocked," said his ex-wife, Sarah Tyree, who still lives in California, and has custody of the couple's 12-year-old daughter.

Missing teen found safe but tied up in Virginia townhouse

Authorities say abduction case began -- and was solved -- on the Internet

post-gazette.com - Michael A. Fuoco - January 05, 2002

For three days, authorities suspected that the mysterious disappearance of a 13-year-old Crafton Heights girl on New Year's Day was linked to her Internet use -- that she possibly met someone in cyberspace who lured her away from home and safety.

Yesterday, the same technology that had endangered Alicia Kozakiewicz allowed authorities to track her to a townhouse in suburban Washington, D.C., where they found her tied up in a bedroom but not seriously hurt.

A half-hour later, at 4 p.m., FBI agents arrested Scott W. Tyree, 38, of Herndon, Va., a computer programmer whose cyber braggadocio on Thursday ultimately led to his arrest in Alicia's disappearance. continued: »

Classmates recall Tyree as 'a loner'

pittsburghlive.com - By Chris Osher - TRIBUNE-REVIEW - January 31, 2002

HERNDON, Va. — Scott Tyree came to his 20th high school reunion last October alone, and he left alone.

Now his former classmates wonder about the man who kept to himself while others greeted old friends.

The man they thought was just a computer whiz, who was the teacher's aide in high school, now is accused of spiriting away a 13-year-old Crafton Heights girl to his alleged "torture dungeon" at his suburban Washington, D.C., townhouse.

A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on Tuesday indicted Tyree, alleging that he intended to produce "a live video of the child victim engaging in sexually explicit conduct."

Tyree is now lodged in the Allegheny County Jail after being transported from Virginia. He is scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. today before U.S. Magistrate Ila Jeanne Sensenich.

If the charges are true, Tyree, 38, lived a double life, according to the description of him that emerged from his family, co-workers, former classmates and neighbors. They knew him as the quiet computer software programmer with a long ponytail who worked long hours. To them, he was the portly man who took in a stray tabby cat and let his 12-year-old daughter name it Cloud.

The FBI says he advertised himself on the Internet as "master for teen slave girls" and posted online photos of himself in front of whips, chains, paddles and a cage.

Facing a four-count indictment in connection with the alleged abduction of Alicia Kozakiewicz, Tyree, if found guilty, could face up to 65 years in prison and $1 million in fines. State charges in Virginia are pending.

"He was always just a loner, nerdy-type guy," said former classmate Stuart Zins, of Fremont, Calif., who chatted briefly with Tyree at the reunion. "I was totally floored." continued: »
