POINCIANA, Fla. -- A teenager was arrested in Osceola County and charged with raping and killing a 99-year-old woman inside a Poinciana home.

Detectives said they believe Edith Mecalla, who was a mother of 11 and a grandmother of 50, was targeted by Moise O. Opont, 17, at her home.

Opont raped and murdered her Sunday before the victim's granddaughter spotted him and he ran out the home's back door, investigators said.

Opont was charged Thursday.

The boy's father, Rev. Richard Opont, spoke with Local 6 about the incident. .....

Authorities in Florida have charged a 17-year-old with sexually assaulting and killing a 99-year-old woman in her home early Tuesday morning.

Initially, investigators called the death of Edith Mecalla, who was living with her 77-year-old daughter in Poinciana, Fla., "suspicious." But a medical examiner ruled Wednesday that the woman's death was a homicide and that she had been the victim of a sexual battery.

Deputies arrested Moise O. Opont late Wednesday night on a felony warrant for burglary and battery to a person over 65 years old, according to Twis Lizasuain, spokeswoman for the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Opont "cooperated" with investigators during questioning, before additional charges of first degree murder and sexual battery charges were filed in the case. .....

Mystery Man Sought After 99-Year-Old Found Dead In Home

POINCIANA, Fla. -- Investigators in Osceola County, Fla., are searching for a man they believe killed a 99-year-old woman inside her home during a burglary.

Detectives said Edith Mecalla, who was a mother of 11 and a grandmother of 50, was found dead Tuesday by her daughter at a home located at 734 Del Ray Drive in Poinciana.

"We expect people to die," the victim's granddaughter Michelle Smith said. "It is a part of life. But to go in this violent manner at this stage in your life, that is the part that hurts the most. She is 99 years old. You could see she is old and lying there. Why would you do this?"

The victim's daughter said she saw an unknown man inside the house. She called police but the man had fled the area by the time officers arrived. .....

Neighbors of a pastor's son never described him as an angel. They knew Moise Opont once broke into a house, smashing holiday ornaments against the wall.

They didn't like the hours he kept, hanging out all night in the street.

But neighbors were stunned to find out Opont, 17, was arrested on charges of raping and killing a 99-year-old woman, whom some described as their neighborhood watchdog.

Edith Mecalla was found dead early Tuesday in the back bedroom of her Poinciana home, which she shared with her 77-year-old daughter, said investigators from the Osceola County Sheriff's Office.

Late Wednesday, deputies arrested Opont at his home, down the street from Mecalla's, on charges of burglary and battery of a person over 65. On Thursday, authorities added a second count of battery of a person over 65, first-degree murder and sexual battery.

Opont was taken to the Osceola Regional Juvenile Detention Center. It is up to the State Attorney's Office to decide whether he will be charged as an adult, officials said.

"He forced his way in," said Twis Lizasuain, spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office. She said Opont, who has a criminal history, cooperated with detectives during a lengthy interview. .....

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. -- Family members can't believe a 17-year-old boy is accused of attacking and killing a 99-year-old woman in her Poinciana home and police say they don't know what the motive was.

Moise Opont, 17, lives three doors down and across the street from 99-year-old Edith Mecalla's house. A tip lead investigators to the house of the troubled teenager, who has been arrested twice before for crimes that never came close to what happened to the 99-year-old.

Mecalla was full of life, laughter and she was light on her feet. Her granddaughter told Eyewitness News she loved to dance. That's one of the things that kept her healthy for so long. Her family is heartbroken over the way she was awakened two nights ago, sexually assaulted and struck until she died.

Investigators said Edith's 77-year-old daughter Hazel got a good look at the attacker while he was still in the house, until he struck her with something and she became disoriented. .....

Well he is a poster boy for the death penalty if I ever saw one. What a piece of scum. Sounds to me this boy had been trouble for a long time and like most parents nowadays think their little darling can do no wrong. I remember a case in VT like this. A 16 year old boy raped and strangled an old woman at a hotel. Now this kid was a puke, I remember him very well. He came from a rich family who indulged his every whim. He beat a boy up pretty bad and the boy's family wanted him to go to jail, but Daddy's money bought him the juvie defense and he served 60 days at a juvie facility and even back then, they had told the parents and the courts that this boy was dangerous, has no remorse for what he did and was apt to be violent again. Six months later he rapes and murders the 78 year old woman. Now he is 17 and charged as adult. Daddy tried to get the court to commit him to a mental hospital but the court was like not a chance. While being held, he attacked and tried to rape another inmate! He was tried and convicted and got 60-life so he will not be out for another 30 years or so. Daddy whined and moaned that his son went to jail and he felt prison would not help his son. My take on it was, you knew your son had some serious issues and yet, before he committed the heinous crime, you never tried to get him some help, you chose to ignore the signs, and only when he was charged did you get on your bandwagon and demand he get some help, by then it was too late. This maggot here even looks evil and I hope to God he gets the DP and I tell you, in FL they need to get OLD SPARKY out of retirement as there is a long line of dirtbags down there that need to ride him all the way to hell!
