Suspect in triple slaying kills self after standoff
Police say man fatally shot wife, 2 children before standoff in Arlington neighborhood
dallasnews.com - By HOLLY YAN and DEBRA DENNIS - Saturday, October 13, 2007
A man suspected of fatally shooting his wife and two of her children drove his car into Lake Arlington and killed himself Friday night with police in pursuit.
Police had surrounded the man earlier in the 3300 block of Carter Drive in East Arlington for more than six hours before he unexpectedly fled and shot himself.
Police had sealed off an area surrounding that block, and shotgun-wielding officers crouched behind squad cars. The man, believed to have been armed with a handgun, had parked in a driveway.
Police evacuated three blocks of houses, and nearby Lynn Hale Elementary School was placed in lockdown. Children eventually were allowed to leave from the back of the building and were escorted by police about 300 yards to their parents, Arlington school district spokeswoman Veronica Sopher said.
Authorities did not immediately identify the man, but Tarrant County property records and a baby sitter for the children identified him as Arthur Jackson, 32, of Fort Worth. The dead woman is believed to be his wife of three years, Lisa Jackson, 36. The dead children are believed to be Tyson Adams, 7, and Jaelynn Ford, 13, and are not thought to be Mr. Jackson's. .....

Standoff ends in man's death
Man drives into lake, kills self hours after 3 are found shot
Star-Telegram staff writers - By DEANNA BOYD and EVA-MARIE AYALA - Sat, Oct. 13, 2007
A 32-year-old man who killed his estranged wife and two stepchildren in Fort Worth held Arlington police at bay for several hours Friday afternoon, holed up in his car, before speeding off and driving into Lake Arlington, where he shot himself in the head.
Arthur Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene Friday night.
Police became aware of Jackson at 12:22 p.m., when a 911 caller said he had dropped off his 3-year-old daughter at Mayfield Road Baptist Church in Arlington, where one of his relatives worked. The child was covered in blood but was uninjured. She has temporarily been placed in foster care.
"He stated to them that he just killed some people and was going to kill some more," said Christy Gilfour, an Arlington police spokeswoman.
A few minutes later, Arlington police found Jackson in his car parked in a driveway of a relative's home in the 3300 block of Carter Drive and blocked him in with a police tactical armored vehicle. While negotiating with police, Jackson put a gun to his head, talked about surrendering and asked to speak to relatives.
About 1 p.m., Fort Worth police went to the home of Jackson's estranged wife in the 2100 block of Mims Street in east Fort Worth. Inside, they found Lisa Ford Jackson, 36, and her two children from a previous relationship -- a 13-year-old girl and 10-year-old boy -- dead from gunshots.
Police and neighbors said the couple had recently separated and may have been having financial trouble.
"Why? Why do adults make kids pay for their problems?" said a tearful and visibly shaken Kaye Miles, a neighbor. .....

Man accused of killing family commits suicide, drives into lake
dallasnews.com - By ANGELA K. BROWN / Associated Press - 10/13/2007
A man accused of killing his estranged wife and two stepchildren fatally shot himself Friday as he drove into a lake after a nearly seven-hour standoff, police said.
When a wrecker pulled the submerged car out of Lake Arlington, officers saw that Arthur Jackson was dead and had a head wound, said Arlington Police Lt. Blake Miller. No officers had fired any shots, he said.
"Obviously, he was a desperate man," Miller said.
Earlier Friday, Jackson dropped off his bloody but unharmed 3-year-old daughter at an Arlington church, where an alarmed worker called police after hearing him say he had killed some people and might kill more, Miller said. ...

ARLINGTON, Texas -- An afternoon standoff in Arlington is over after a man believed to have shot and killed his estranged wife and two stepchildren eluded police and led them on a chase before driving his car into Lake Arlington, police say.

Police: Girl, 3, described her dad shooting her family
star-telegram.com - By DEANNA BOYD - Star-Telegram staff writer - Sun, Oct. 14, 2007
FORT WORTH -- A 32-year-old man who took his own life Friday night, hours after fatally shooting his estranged wife and her two children inside their Fort Worth home, was grinning when he dropped the couple's blood-covered 3-year-old daughter off with a relative that afternoon, police said.
"He was smiling when he said, 'I killed Lisa. I shot her in the head,'" said Fort Worth homicide Detective Michel Carroll. "He was smiling."
Fort Worth police believe that Arthur Jackson, 32, may have killed Lisa Ford Jackson and her 7-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter from previous relationships early Friday. The woman had talked to a friend on the phone at about 1 a.m. Friday but failed to make a planned 6 a.m. hair appointment, Carroll quoted Lisa Jackson's sister as saying.
"That hairdresser called her several times and got no answer," Carroll said.
Shortly after noon Friday, Arthur Jackson took 3-year-old Ariana, the couple's only child, to Mayfield Road Baptist Church in Arlington, where a cousin worked. He told his cousin what he had done, then asked that she make sure that the girl was given to his mother in Memphis before driving away, said Fort Worth homicide Sgt. J.D. Thornton.
In a phone conversation with an Arlington officer soon after leaving the church, Jackson repeated what he had done and directed the officer to the Fort Worth address in the 2100 block of Mims Street where the bodies could be found, Thornton said.
Fort Worth police arrived at the house about 1 p.m. and found Lisa Jackson lying dead on her bed. On the floor nearby, Jaelyn Ford lay face up, and her 7-year-old half-brother, Tyson Adams, lay face down. Fort Worth police mistakenly reported Friday that the boy was 10.
All three had been shot in the head. .....

Absolutely a chilling account of a man out of control. I watched a bit of the raw feed as the 12 or more squad cars followed him to his demise. None of what he did was rational except (as cold as this may seem) sparing his own daughter's life. Why did he kill his estranged wife and her children? We can only wait for the speculations to be published in the news. How very sad that someone who obviously was depressed did not seek help. But, as neighbors said, he seemed like a nice happy guy. Did he wake up that morning knowing what he was going to do? Sure wish we could have "got to him" in time to save all of their lives.

Police say 3-year-old described slayings
chron.com - AP - Oct. 14, 2007, 12:09PM
FORT WORTH, Texas A 3-year-old girl who was covered in blood when her father dropped her off with a relative after fatally shooting his estranged wife and her two children inside their Fort Worth home described the shootings, police said.
In a brief interview with Child Protective Services, the child indicated that she had likely witnessed her mother and siblings get shot. Her father, 32-year-old Arthur Jackson, later shot himself after a nearly seven-hour standoff with police Friday.
"From what I understand, she said, 'Daddy shot Mommy. Daddy shot Brother and Sister,' or something to that effect," Fort Worth homicide Detective Michel Carroll told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for its Sunday editions. "Then she went, 'Bang, bang, bang.'"
Since the 3-year-old was covered with blood but uninjured, police are trying to determine whether her mother was holding her when she was shot, Fort Worth homicide Sgt. J.D. Thornton said. .....

Estranged wife told family of her fears
star-telegram.com - By DEANNA BOYD - Star-Telegram Staff Writer - Tue, Oct. 16, 2007
FORT WORTH -- At first, relatives say, Lisa Ford Jackson kept her marital problems to herself.
"My sister was a very private person," Laura Pruitt said. "She was so happy to be married. She always wanted to be married and have a family. I think her pride wouldn't let her" talk about the problems.
But more recently, Lisa Jackson had told a few relatives, including her sister, that her husband, Arthur Jackson, was physically abusive.
"She actually voiced it because I think it had gotten to the point where it was getting way out of control," Pruitt said.
The final straw, Pruitt said, was when Arthur Jackson pointed a shotgun at his wife and ordered her out of the house on the day before school started.
"At that time she said she was going to get out," Pruitt said.
But Lisa Jackson wouldn't make it out alive. Early Friday, police say, Arthur Jackson fatally shot his 36-year-old estranged wife and her children from previous relationships -- Tyson Adams, 7, and Jaelyn Ford, 13 -- inside their home, in the 2100 block of Mims Street. »
Happy memories: Though overwhelmed by their grief, Pruitt and Jandrea Cooper, Lisa Jackson's best friend for 19 years, couldn't help smiling and laughing as they talked about Jaelyn and Tyson. »
A true friend: On Monday, Cooper carried two birthday cards that her best friend had given her.
When relatives visited Lisa Jackson's home after the slayings, they found a card addressed to Cooper, whose birthday was Sunday. Lisa Jackson had apparently never mailed it. »

This is stuff you read about and see and think it won't happen to you, but it did, it happened to us. And we have to deal with it for the rest of our lives, we have to, said Richette Moore.
Moore's 7-year-old nephew, Tyson, was one of the victims who died in the shootings Friday in Fort Worth.
My nephew, not going to ever get to do things because of what he took from him, said Moore.
