Fourteen-year-old Asa H. Coon Opens Fire In Cleveland School

Police say gunman turned the gun on himself after wounding four

By David Lohr (http://www.crimelibrary.com/about/authors/lohr/index.html)

October 10, 2007

CLEVELAND, OH (Crime Library) — A young man wearing a black Marilyn Manson concert shirt, black jeans, and black-painted finger nails walked into SuccessTech Academy today armed with two .38 caliber revolvers, and opened fire, shooting four people before turning a gun on himself.

Police have identified the shooter as Asa H. Coon, a 14-year-old student who had been suspended from school last week for fighting. Details remain sketchy, however, it appears the shooting first started in a bathroom area after a student identified as Michael Peek punched Coon in the face.

"Coon came out of the bathroom and bumped Mike and he (Mike) punched him in his face," said student Rasheem Smith, 15. "Mike started walking. He shot Mike in the side."

When the gunfire erupted, the principal announced a "Code Blue" alert over the public address system, and students began hiding under desks and in closets. According to eyewitness accounts, Coon worked his way up through the first two floors of administrative offices and to the third floor of classrooms.

Darnell Rodgers, 18, was shot as he made his way through the stairwell in search of safety.

"It took me a couple of minutes to realize that I was actually shot; when I felt my arm burning in the area, that's when I realized that I had got shot," Rodgers said.

Asa Coon MySpace page a fake

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/10/creator_of_fake_asa_coon_web_p.html

Posted by Christopher Evans October 11, 2007 12:27PM

A Utah teenager has admitted creating a fake Asa Coon Web page on the social networking site Myspace.com.

Posing as the gunman in Wednesday's shooting at Success Tech Academy in Cleveland, the 19-year-old creator of the fake Web site said in an email exchange with the Plain Dealer: "I don't generally give out personal information ... I, like many others (search for any famous person) make fake profiles on MySpace for the sole purpose of giving people a place to vent their thoughts and feelings."

Several national television news organizations and Web sites have quoted from Coon's page as real. Coon killed himself after shooting two teachers and two students.

"I realize I should put a disclaimer of sorts stating that this isn't the Official Asa H. Coon MySpace, but I believe if I did do that people wouldn't express their feelings," said the page creator who published the information at approximately 9:30 pm Pacific Standard Time, 12:30 am here. "I've been reading the comments on the stories on the major Cleveland News Agency websites, and I hear a lot of anger. When people do believe this is Asa Coon's MySpace, and they know that he will never read these, the people are inclined to express their true thoughts and feelings, if that makes much sense.

The teen, who lives in Orem, said he found a photo of "Asa Coon" after searching for "Goth kid" on www.photobucket.com, a site where people share photos.

The teen also claims credit for creating a fake Myspace profile for the Virginia Tech shooter, Seung-Hui Cho.

"I created that profile late in the event happened, and throughout that week and weekend the page accumulated over 300,000 page views, as well as 20,000 blog comments," he says. "The Seung-Hui Cho profile was removed from MySpace after many people reported it, and I expect this profile will disappear in the next few days."

Tips for helping kids cope with shooting

cleveland.com -Fran Henry - Plain Dealer Reporter - Thursday, October 11, 2007

Word travels fast, and students will be talking about Wednesday's shooting at SuccessTech Academy, a small Cleveland high school sometimes compared to a close-knit family. And they may return home anxious and worried that a shooting could happen in their schools, too.

What should parents do?

Watch for anxiety:

"Tune in to any anxiety they may have. Listen to them," said Judy Stenta, of Bellefaire JCB's Social Advocates for Youth program.

"Talk to them. What are they concerned about?"

Defuse their fears: .....

School Gunman Had Access Despite Threats

Associated Press - By JOE MILICIA – 56 minutes ago

CLEVELAND (AP) — Despite 26 security cameras, officials couldn't say Thursday how an armed, suspended 14-year-old student was able to get into his downtown school a day earlier and shoot two students and two teachers before killing himself.

School officials also were investigating how a number of warning signs from the troubled student, including threats made last week, apparently went unheeded.

Police were checking surveillance video Thursday for clues as to how Asa H. Coon, armed with two revolvers, was able to enter the SuccessTech Academy alternative school. Police Chief Michael McGrath said a classmate could have let him in a back door.

Coon was a new student at the school, but the district has a dossier on past problems. He had mental health problems, spent time in two juvenile facilities and was suspended from school last year for attempting to harm a student, according to juvenile court records. .....

Brother detained on unrelated charge

msnbc.msn.com

Excerpt: His older brother, Stephen, was taken into custody at the family home for parole violations, according to prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Lyons. The 19-year-old said his brother did not get any guns from him but wouldn’t answer questions about the shooting.

Lyons said the arrest was not connected to Wednesday’s school shooting, but McGrath said officials would be talking to Stephen Coon and his mother about the weapons Asa Coon used.

McGrath said that since 2006, police had gone to the family’s home five times: for calls about domestic violence, an assault call, a property crime and a hit-and-run accident. .....

Asa's life marked by run-ins with police

cleveland.com - Friday, October 12, 2007

Asa Coon's life was marked by a series of run-ins between police and his family, particularly Asa's older brother Stephen. Notable events include:

September 1999
Asa, 5, is shot in the arm by a pellet gun, leaving a cut on his shoulder. He, his twin sister, Nicole, and their older brother Stephen, 11, tell police Asa shot himself. Lori Looney, their mother, tells police that the children's absent father gave them three pellet guns. She asks police to take the guns.

October 1999
Stephen, 11, takes a cap gun to school and gets it taken away.

November 1999
Stephen breaks into a neighbor's house and steals a bottle of champagne.

July 2001
Looney cooks her eldest son, Stephen, 13, steak, potatoes and cheesecake. He throws things, calls her names and whips her with an extension cord. When police arrive she shows them her bruised legs, which she said were caused by Stephen kicking her. .....

Disturbing crime scene photo from school shooting posted on local DJ's web site

wkyc.com - Bill Safos - Updated:10/12/2007 10:48:43 PM

CLEVELAND -- Questions are being asked after a picture of suspected school shooter, Asa Coon, taken after he committed was posted on a local web site.

For a good part of the afternoon Rover, the morning drive disc jockey on 92.3 had a photograph of Asa Coon on his website. The picture was taken after Coon was dead. He was lying on the floor of the school and it was graphic.

Officers who were the first responders at SuccessTech discovered the body while they were saving lives. Rover's web site says supposedly a cop took the picture but they weren't able to check out it's authenticity. Police say they didn't take it but were able to confirm it was a real picture of Coon.

"That's what I saw," said Officer Greg Kwan.

"That's exactly how he looked," said Capt. Joseph Sadie. .....

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Cleveland public schools plan to place metal detectors and security guards in all schools in response to a shooting rampage that left two teachers and two students wounded before the gunman killed himself.

CEO Eugene Sanders says schools will be required to keep all doors locked and designate a single entrance.

Other changes will be the creation of a confidential hotline students can call with any concerns. The hotline number is (216)-771-SAFE or (216)-771-7233. The hotline is confidential so students can report unsafe or dangerous behavior anonymously. .....

Cleveland Schools getting metal detectors and security guards

wkyc.com - Tom Beres - Updated:10/12/2007 7:33:48 PM

CLEVELAND -- The shootings at SuccessTech are bringing a security overhaul to all Cleveland Schools.
Schools CEO Eugene Sanders announced all Cleveland schools will be getting metal detectors and security guards. And each school's security plan will get a consultant's review.

But Sanders put emphasis on improved communication and counseling programs as a more effective way to reach out to and communicate with troubled students like Asa Coon, the SuccessTech schooter.

Sanders faces many tough security questions. Did administrators ignore student warnings? Why have some important security jobs gone unfilled for months?

"I take personal responsibility. If you're asking me am I hurt? Am I disappointed? Have I not slept for several days? The answer is yes. My commitment is to work as hard as I can with every fiber of my being to protect our students," Sanders said. .....

Schools CEO outlines security plan

cleveland.com - Posted by Henry Gomez - October 12, 2007 17:01PM

Cleveland Schools CEO Eugene Sanders outlined on Friday a two-pronged plan to address safety concerns illuminated by the shooting rampage at SuccessTech Academy.

The eight-page plan emphasizes human relations and security measures that Sanders would like to see implemented - some as soon as Monday or Tuesday. It calls for metal detectors to be placed in each school and for the hiring of an unspecified number of security guards.

Sanders, who joined Mayor Frank Jackson this afternoon at a City Hall news conference, said he "would love to turn back the hands of time." The schools chief was asked repeatedly if he had made mistakes dealing with security issues leading up to Wednesday, when 14-year-old Asa Coon shot and injured two teachers and two students before killing himself.

"I am disappointed we had the tragedy," a rattled Sanders said at one point.

"If you're asking me if I'm disappointed, if I'm hurt, if I've not slept for the last several nights ... the answer is yes. I'm disappointed. I'm hurt that we lost a student."

Sanders said SuccessTech will be closed again Monday, giving teachers there an extra day to prepare for the students' return. That evening, the school will hold an open house for parents from 6 to 8 p.m., when school district officials will review the new security plan. .....

Gunman's Uncle: Teen Upset With Teachers

Associated Press By JOE MILICIA – 7 hours ago

CLEVELAND (AP) — The 14-year-old who opened fire at his high school had been upset with teachers, saying they wouldn't listen to his side of the story regarding a recent after-school scuffle that got him suspended, the teenager's uncle said Friday.

Larry Looney, who lived upstairs from Asa Coon in a duplex, said the two were lifting weights Tuesday when the boy told him about Monday's fight with another student and his three-day suspension.

"He really didn't want to talk about it," Looney said. "He said he really didn't do anything to start it. He said the teachers wouldn't listen to his side of the story.

Bipolar Cleveland shooter asked for help and got none

capecodtoday.com - posted by petercohen - 10/12/07

The country was shocked earlier this week when Asa Coon, a 14 year old boy attending Success Tech Academy in Cleveland, Ohio, managed to sneak weapons into school and went on a rampage, shooting four others before killing himself. Sadly, Coon's actions weren't surprising to those that knew him. Why wasn't more done to help him? Coon's story illustrates some of the problems faced by children and adults who suffer from emotional disabilities.

At the outset, let me just say that I find Coon's actions reprehensible, and in no way think that the suggestion that's emerging that he suffered from bipolar disorder is an excuse for what happened. But the reports emerging from Cleveland this week show that his classmates and teachers all knew that Coon was headed for trouble and didn't take what he was saying seriously. Now a boy is dead, four others have been wounded, and the community and parents nationwide have questions.

As it turns out, Asa Coon spent time in and out of detention centers and youth facilities after he was removed from his home for assaultive behavior. This is not uncommon for children with severe emotional impairements. Unfortunately, the systems in most states, including here in Massachusetts, are heavily weighted towards treating youth with mental illnesses as violent offenders -- criminalizing them, rather than treating them.

Coon even attempted to take his own life prior to this incident. Eventually he was suspected of having bipolar disorder, after spending time in a mental hospital. .....

Learn the lessons from Cleveland shootings

mansfieldnewsjournal.com - Saturday, October 13, 2007

The issue: Cleveland student shoots four at school, then killed himself.

Our opinion: Both adults and students can take steps to prevent such incidents in the future

It could have happened anywhere.

The shooting at a Cleveland high school that wounded four people and then saw the shooter turn the gun on himself just as easily could have happened here in Richland County or anywhere else in Ohio or the United States.

But there are a few big reminders we here in north central Ohio should take to heart.

If students see something suspicious, such as a weapon or a fellow student acting strangely or making threats, they should tell an adult.

Just as importantly, those adults must have the sense to stop, turn away from the minutiae of daily tasks and make investigating it their top priority. .....

Cleveland schools reopen today, with new security plan

District offers support, has new security plan

cleveland.com - Jesse Tinsley - Plain Dealer Reporter - Monday, October 15, 2007

As Cleveland public school students return to classes today for the first time since last week's shooting at SuccessTech Academy, they will be greeted with emotional support and a $5 million security plan.

Today "is the first official day of healing," said Eugene Sanders, chief executive of the Cleveland public schools, at a Sunday news conference.

When children arrive today and Tuesday, "they will be greeted by teachers, psychologists and support staff ready to listen and provide any reassurances that everything will indeed be OK," he said. In addition, Sanders said, there will be enhanced security at each school today.

Also today, the district could begin buying metal detectors and handheld metal detecting wands for all 111 schools in the district, said the district's chief operating officer Dan Burns. The equipment and installation is expected to cost about $3.3 million, he said.

The cost of added security staff and maintenance of the new equipment is estimated at $2 million per year, Burns said.

All Cleveland schools will open for classes today, except SuccessTech, which will begin regular sessions Tuesday, Sanders said.

Teachers and staff will report to the academy today, to prepare for the reopening of the Lakeside Avenue school. The academy was shut down Wednesday after the attack by 14-year-old Asa Coon. .....

Gregg Chenoweth: Shooter's 'music theology' least discussed

daily-journal.com - 10/15/2007, 10:44 am

On Monday, he didn't know the answer to life's No. 1 question. By 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, he did.

Last week, Asa Coon, 14, was suspended for escalating an argument to a fist fight with a fellow student at Cleveland's SuccessTech Academy. He brewed with rage for two days.

By Wednesday, Coon returned to school with a duffel bag over his shoulder, ascended three flights of stairs to a hall bathroom and changed into a black Marilyn Manson concert T-shirt. Without saying a word, he shot two teachers and two schoolmates with a .38-caliber revolver. Nine shots later, he turned the pistol on himself, the incident's only fatality.

What really aggravated Coon? Most news reports reference outrage over suspension. Some note his temper and habit for cursing at teachers. But virtually no one discusses the conversation content that seeded debate, fostered argument, cultivated a fight, warranted suspension and ultimately provoked gun-slinging.

The dispute was over God. Coon didn't believe, and boasted of worshipping rocker Marilyn Manson. It was his music theology or idol worship or something in between. .....

Editorial: Preventable Tragedy

rockymounttelegram.com - By Staff - Rocky Mount Telegram - Monday, October 15, 2007

Last week's shootings at a Cleveland high school are another example of why it is necessary to reach out to people who seem troubled.

Larry Looney – uncle of Asa Coon, who injured four people Wednesday before committing suicide – told The Associated Press that his nephew was upset because teachers at SuccessTech Academy would not listen to his side of the story regarding a fight that resulted in his suspension. He also said the 14-year-old was bullied and picked on throughout his life and had been beaten up regularly.

SuccessTech students reported that Coon recently threatened to blow up the school, but neither they nor teachers acted on his statements.

Despite his past troubles, Coon had no excuse to make threats, take a gun to school, shoot people and kill himself. But this incident, like many others, could have been prevented. .....

Asa Coon's upbringing was violent, chaotic

cleveland.com - Rachel Dissell and Gabriel Baird - Plain Dealer Reporters - October 12, 2007

On the January day police arrested Asa Coon for punching his mother last year, she pointed to the words scrawled on his bedroom wall: "I will kill you all." His name was signed beneath.

Sometimes, it seemed Asa was fighting the world - and losing.

And his home, the place that was supposed to be a haven from the pressures facing a child - whether bullies at school or a bad grade on a test - instead seemed to add to Asa's trouble.

Those pressures and slow-burning hurt bubbled over Wednesday afternoon when Asa shot two teachers and two classmates at SuccessTech Academy in downtown Cleveland before turning the gun on himself. He was 14.

This is the home Asa Coon grew up in:

It was chaotic.

When Asa was 3, his mother, Lori Looney, was investigated by social workers after they were alerted that she often left her four children with drug addicts. Courts in New York found the children were neglected.

Social workers intervened later in Cleveland as well, once after Asa was shot in the bicep with a BB gun, and another time when they noticed he had flea bites that he had scratched into scars.

His home was also violent.

Instead of nurturing Asa, his older brother Stephen picked on him. .....

Shooter Asa Coon was failing, says wounded SuccessTech teacher Michael Grassie

Student was angry because he was failing

Plain Dealer Reporter - Joseph L. Wagner - Tuesday, October 16, 2007

SuccessTech Academy student Asa Coon was flunking World History and tried to pick a fight with teacher Michael Grassie in the days before the 14-year-old went on a shooting spree at the school, Grassie said.

Meeting with the media before his release Monday from MetroHealth Medical Center, Grassie said he would never forget the look on Coon's face as he confronted him in a classroom flashing two handguns.

"It was something I haven't seen on a 14-year-old's face before," Grassie said. It was a face of "total anger, real hatred." He said he knew that Coon was angry with him earlier because Grassie noted on his school progress report that he was failing the course.

Coon asked during the confrontation: "Now what do you have to say to me?"

Grassie said he was mentoring another student at the time when Coon turned to the student and said "you're cool," then turned his gun on the teacher.

The bullet entered Grassie's torso, hit his spleen and pancreas but missed his aorta before exiting the back. Grassie suffered the worst injuries of Coon's shooting victims. »

Coon was the only one killed.

Jasmine Lawrence, a SuccessTech Academy senior, returned to school Tuesday morning saying, "I'm not scared. Asa's not here." Others said the would not mind the metal detector and additional armed guard.

Lavonne Johnikin, mother of Brittani, a 10th-grader, said she was comfortable that the schools have done all they could to make SuccessTech safe.

However, Bria Bellanca, a 10th-grader, said she was nervous and not happy with Cleveland schools because it failed to have metal detectors before Asa Coon, 14, smuggled in two handguns, ammunition and knives last Wednesday and shot two teachers and two students before reportedly killing himself. "All of this could have been avoided," Bellanca said, adding that students had brought weapons into the school before. »

School where shooting occurred reopens

cincypost.com - By M.R. Kropko - Associated Press

CLEVELAND - The contrast was clear.

Students and teachers were welcomed back to SuccessTech Academy on Tuesday in what amounted to a community pep rally. Six days before, they had reason to fear for their lives when a suspended student started shooting, wounding four before killing himself.

One boy returning to the high school raised his hands and shouted to cheering supporters, "I love you all."

"We're confident everything is going to be OK," said Kim Middlebrooks, a parent who brought her 16-year-old daughter to school. "This is a very close-knit school."

"We just want them to know we support them and love them and that we want them to get back to the business of learning," said Mickey Brown, a Cleveland schools administrator.

Only 15 students were reported as absent in the school with an enrollment of about 250, school district spokesman Ben Holbert said.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said the greeting, which involved clergy and cheering community leaders, was an effort to show students and staff there is concern for safety in schools.

Returning students filed through a newly installed metal detector and placed backpacks onto a conveyor for scanning. continued:

CLEVELAND -- Students and faculty were greeted with supportive cheers and applause Tuesday morning as they returned to a high school that had been closed since a classmate shot four people then killed himself last week.

Outside the entrance of SuccessTech Academy, community leaders and civic organizations formed a human pathway as students and teachers entered the school. Inside, additional security measures including armed security guards and a new metal detector were in effect.

"I was scared that day, but I feel that was just one person out of everyone who goes here," said senior Jasmine Lawrence, 17, as she arrived. continued:

Civic leaders welcome, cheer SuccessTech students

Mayor, clergy, schools chief, civic leaders clap 'em in

Plain Dealer Reporter - Joseph L. Wagner - Wednesday, October 17, 2007

SuccessTech Academy students and teachers were celebrated Tuesday at a school that will never be the same.

A group of business, civic and school leaders surprised the arriving students with cheers and applause, then steered them toward a new reality - a metal detector and hallways guarded like never before.

The security measures are the timeless reminder of the terror that unfolded last Wednesday, when a suspended student slipped into the building, pulled weapons from a duffel bag and shot and wounded four people before killing himself, police said.

The newly secured school, with an enrollment of about 250 students, reopened Tuesday, six days after Asa Coon's rampage.

"It's kind of scary, at first," said Ashlie Cransfield, a sophomore at the downtown public school designed for stellar students.

The community did its best to assuage her fears. The cheering squad of ministers, business executives, youth volunteers and school administrators formed an aisle for the students to enter the school and begin their new day. continued:

Photo of Asa Coon's body taken by Cleveland policeman

Mark Puente - Plain Dealer Reporter - Saturday, October 20, 2007

The photo of Asa Coon's bloody body that is circulating on the Internet was taken by a Cleveland police officer who snapped the picture with his cell phone camera.

Cleveland police launched an investigation and questioned the officers who entered SuccessTech Academy Oct. 10. Patrolman Walter Emerick admitted he took the photo of the dead 14-year-old student, said Safety Director Martin Flask.

Emerick, a 12-year veteran, sent the photo to other people, but he did not post the picture on the Internet, Flask said. The picture first appeared on the Internet the day after the shooting and is still viewable.

The incident remains under investigation, and Flask said a disciplinary hearing could be held for Emerick. Flask said he is disappointed that a police officer would exchange the photo of a crime scene. continued: »

Surveillance images just released reveal a haunting scene from a heartbreaking day in Cleveland.

They are from Oct. 10, the day 14-year-old Asa Coon shot and injured four people inside SuccessTech high school, before shooting himself to death.

The images, gathered from surveillance cameras all over the school, show Coon wearing a T-shirt with a gun in each hand, marching down school hallways, hunting for victims.

Coon first appears on camera shortly after entering the school, on the second-floor landing of the north stairwell. He is wearing a white, hooded sweat shirt with a black bag slung over his shoulder.

Once he reaches the fourth floor, he lumbers down one hallway, then another, keeping his white hood over his head, suggesting an awareness of the surveillance cameras, police say. — continued: » X 2 pages

Security footage shows Asa Coon stalking, firing at SuccessTech Academy

Asa Coon is seen stalking, firing in silent security camera footage

cleveland.com - Gabriel Baird - Plain Dealer Reporter - October 26, 2007

He looks like any other high school student - except for the guns 14-year-old Asa Coon holds in each hand.

Coon's rampage was captured in eerie, time-lapse snapshots by security cameras at SuccessTech Academy.

The 82 seconds of soundless footage show him stalking the hallways and students running in fear for their lives. The violence, however, all takes place just out of the camera's view. — continued: » X 2 pages

Cleveland School Shooting Video Released

Video Shows Student Shooting 2 Victims at Cleveland School; 2 Others Were Attacked Off Camera

abcnews.go.com - THOMAS J. SHEERAN Associated Press Writer - CLEVELAND Oct 25, 2007 (AP)

His face concealed by a white hooded sweat shirt, the student gunman climbs an enclosed staircase with his cache of weapons in a backpack, moments before opening fire on classmates and teachers.

Strikingly clear photos pulled from surveillance cameras and released Thursday show Asa Coon as he moved around SuccessTech Academy on Oct. 10, when he wounded two teachers and two high school classmates before killing himself.

The images show the hallway where students were shot: One is seen lying on the floor, the other is hidden behind a curve in the wall. The scenes are not overtly graphic because the violence is captured by cameras about 100 feet away.

The teacher shootings were inside classrooms, away from the hallway cameras. — continued: »
