SAN JOSE Calif. Sep.10, 2007 (KGO) - San Jose's police chief was almost in tears at a news conference Monday as he talked about the beating death of a 6 year old boy. He told reporters that the boyfriend of the child's mother is in custody for the crime and the mother's role is being investigated.
"You can't help but look at this picture and wonder why we live in a world in which a little six year old boy gets beaten and what leads to that."
San Jose police chief, Rob Davis, was emotional Monday talking about the murder of six year old Oscar Jimenez Jr.
34-year-old Samuel Corona is charged with the boy's murder.
Police say Oscar's mother, Kathryn Jimenez, witnessed the deadly beating after an exchange with Corona's one-year-old child.
Corona told Jimenez that Oscar Jr. had made a comment that he would hurt Corona's child. Jimenez then witnessed Samuel Corona brutally beat Oscar Jr. at their San Jose home on Hayes Avenue on February 18th, but the murder wasn't discovered until recently.
Oscar's biological father got authorities involved in the search for Oscar when his estranged wife kept making excuses as to why he wasn't able to see his son. .....

San Jose man arrested in beating death of girlfriend's 6-year-old son
mercurynews.com - By Sean Webby - 09/10/2007
The terrible secret of where 6-year-old Oscar Jimenez Jr. had been for the last seven months came spilling out of his sobbing mother in a nearly empty San Jose courtroom late last month.
On Saturday, Kathryn Jimenez showed police the exact spot: a slab of cement in the courtyard of a vacant apartment 700 miles away, in Phoenix, Ariz.
Within moments, they were unearthing Oscar Jr.'s decomposing body and along with it, the story of how the first-grader ended up there.
Police on Monday revealed the details - along with the arrest of Jimenez's boyfriend, Samuel Corona, who allegedly beat the boy after Oscar Jr. apparently threatened to hurt Corona's 1-year-old son.
"Say goodbye to your son," Corona told Jimenez, according to police, then punched and kicked the boy to death in front of her.
Corona and Jimenez, 38, drove Oscar's battered body from their San Jose home to Phoenix, police said, and buried it under a mound of dirt and fertilizer. Two weeks later, Corona covered the secret grave with quick-dry cement. .....

Ex-mother-in-law says suspect in San Jose 6-year-old's death beat her grandchildren and daughter
mercurynews.com - 09/13/2007
Before Samuel Corona allegedly beat his girlfriend's 6-year-old son to death in San Jose, he left a trail of busted lips, blackened eyes and broken families in Arizona, according to court documents and his former mother-in-law.
Thursday, Corona fought extradition to Santa Clara County on charges that he brutally beat Oscar Jimenez Jr. to death and then buried the boy's small body in the lawn of abandoned apartment building in Phoenix. He told prosecutors that police had picked up the wrong man.
But his ex-mother-in-law said she knows he's capable of beating, and she believes even killing, a child.
"I knew this would happen," said Judy Love, whose daughter Stephanie Corona was once married to Corona. "It was just a matter of time."
Court documents support Love's account of her daughter's abusive relationship with Corona. Six times he violated a restraining order Stephanie had gotten to keep him away. He fought with police during confrontations with her. He broke into her house to beat her after she'd left him, leaving bruises visible to officers who came to arrest him, according to court records.
He was never drunk. He didn't do drugs. He didn't even smoke.
"He was just brutal," Love said. .....

Group holds doorstep vigil for 6-year-old San Jose boy slain in beating
Mercury News - By Connie Skipitares - 09/28/2007
None of the 12 people gathered in front of the modest gray home in South San Jose knew 6-year-old Oscar Jimenez Jr. or his family. But they gathered Thursday to pray and sing hymns for the little boy so brutally slain in the home and to call attention to the horror of violence.
The group - ministers and lay people of faith - hold public vigils for victims of violence, like Oscar, to give comfort and healing to their families and to the communities where the deaths occurred.
The Rev. Diana Gibson, a Presbyterian minister who led the vigil, says violent deaths such as little Oscar's wound the whole community, which is why the group holds public prayers to help everyone heal.
The death of the youngster rocked the neighborhood behind Oak Grove High School, which learned earlier this month that the former residents of the gray home on Hayes Avenue had kept a horrible secret. The boyfriend of Oscar's mother allegedly beat the boy to death on Feb. 18 in one of the bedrooms as his mother watched, prosecutors say.
The couple allegedly drove to Arizona with his remains and buried them, they say. The couple took up residence there.
The boyfriend, Samuel Corona, 34, and Oscar's mother, Kathryn Jimenez, 38, are behind bars. Corona is in custody in Phoenix as the alleged killer. Jimenez is in Santa Clara County Jail charged with parental abduction because she wouldn't tell the boy's father, her estranged husband, where the boy was. The district attorney's office is exploring whether to add a charge of accessory to murder. .....

Father buries "Oscar Chiquito," 6, in San Jose
mercurynews.com - By Kim Vo - 09/29/2007
Little Oscar Jimenez was buried again Saturday.
But unlike that first cold grave - secretly dug, police say, by his mother and her boyfriend in Arizona, then covered with quick-dry cement - Oscar was surrounded Saturday by friends and family who formed a loving circle around his short casket and tearfully said goodbye.
It was a proper beautiful child's funeral, though many at San Jose's Oak Hill cemetery might argue the words "child" and "funeral" don't belong together. There were Batman balloons and red, yellow and blue carnations arranged into Superman's curving "S."
After the white casket was lowered, mourners blanketed it with lilies and roses. Then someone added a toy race car.
The approximately 200 mourners struggled to make sense of the 6-year-old's death. Standing before the casket, sniffles and gulping sobs filled the cemetery as musicians strummed the guitar and requinto.
"To understand why it happened is really hard," said Maria Elia Aguirre, a friend of the family's. "The mother, she didn't do anything."
Authorities say Kathryn Jimenez's boyfriend hit, kicked and stomped Oscar Jr. to death on Feb. 18. The couple then buried him in the courtyard of a vacant apartment building 700 miles away.
They kept the secret until August, when Kathryn Jimenez - questioned about her missing son - broke down and confessed. In September, officials traveled to Arizona and busted through the cement to unearth Oscar. .....

San Jose mother of slain boy charged with accessory to murder
mercurynews.com - By Brandon Bailey - 10/04/2007
Her attorney says Kathryn Jimenez was the victim of an abusive man. But a prosecutor says the San Jose woman waited far too long, and lied too often, before she finally told authorities that her boyfriend had beaten her 6-year-old son Oscar to death and then buried the body behind an Arizona apartment.
On Thursday, the Santa Clara County district attorney's office charged Jimenez with endangering her son and being an accessory to his murder, by helping to cover it up.
The new charges, added to an earlier count of parental abduction, are the latest twist in a case that has horrified the community and shaken even veteran members of the district attorney's office and San Jose police. While Jimenez told her story last month under a grant of partial immunity, Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Rosen said she still can be prosecuted on the basis of her earlier statements and other evidence.
Jimenez, 38, lied repeatedly about her son's whereabouts in the months after his death, according to police - telling an investigator that her son was living with her in Eureka, but refusing several times to put the boy on the phone. But on Aug. 31, she revealed that boyfriend Samuel Corona had killed Oscar Jimenez Jr. on Feb. 18, after the little boy apparently said something about hurting Corona's 1-year-old child. .....

Herhold: Mom should be punished in son's death
Mercury News - By Scott Herhold - 10/07/2007
I don't know about you, but the most gut-wrenching story I've read all year deals with the beating death of 6-year-old Oscar Jimenez by a man who police say had a long and violent history of abuse.
Last week, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office charged the boy's mother, Kathryn Jimenez, 38, with endangering her son and being an accessory to his murder.
As much as I sympathize with a woman who lost her son in such horrendous fashion, it was the right call. She should not go unpunished.
Yes, I know how victims of abuse can ally with their abusers. And yes, I know she told her attorney that her boyfriend, Samuel Corona, the man accused of Oscar's murder, threatened to kill her if she talked.
Yet it doesn't explain all the lies she told family members and authorities about where Oscar was, or why she left him in a dangerous position. She failed her fundamental duty as a mother. And she tried to cover it up. .....

Mother guilty in son's death
SHE FACES 7 YEARS FOR HIDING BEATING
Mercury News - By Brandon Bailey - 10/11/2007 01:32:58 AM PDT
Fighting back tears, a San Jose woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony charges that she endangered her 6-year-old son and helped cover up his death after her boyfriend allegedly beat and stomped the boy to death while she watched.
Kathryn Jimenez's voice was barely audible in the crowded courtroom, as she softly repeated "Guilty, your honor," when Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Jerome Nadler asked for her plea on each of three felony charges that prosecutors had filed against her.
Her plea also drew sobs from some members of Jimenez's childhood church, who turned out to support her. But it was little comfort to the father of the slain boy, who watched silently from the back of the room. Jimenez could face seven years in prison when she returns for sentencing next month. .....

sfgate.com - John Coté, Chronicle Staff Writer - Thursday, October 11, 2007
(10-10) 20:18 PDT San Jose -- A San Jose woman who allegedly watched as her boyfriend beat her 6-year-old son to death pleaded guilty Wednesday to being an accessory to murder and other charges, prosecutors said.
Kathryn Jimenez, 38, also pleaded guilty to child abduction and felony child endangerment without an agreement from prosecutors on her sentence, Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Jeff Rosen said.
He called Jimenez's pleas "the right thing to do" after she was charged last week with covering up the death of her son, Oscar Jimenez Jr.

Father of slain boy claims estranged wife ignored his misgivings
'I WARNED HER SO MANY TIMES'
Mercury News - By Sean Webby - 09/13/2007
For months, there were the unanswered phone calls to his estranged wife, the worrying, the waiting by the phone, the wondering: Where was his 6-year-old son?
Finally, Big Oscar is getting Little Oscar back home.
But the two can't sneak into any more movies together, play around with the G.I. Joes piled up in the corner of Big Oscar's San Jose apartment or pretend they are superhero crime-fighters.
Now, Oscar Jimenez Sr. says, the fight for justice is about his slain son.
The brutal homicide of Oscar Jimenez Jr. - allegedly beaten by his mother's boyfriend Feb. 18, then buried in a grave in Arizona kept secret for seven months - has enraged strangers and brought many to tears.
"Some people wish their kids would grow up to be president and stuff, but I wish he had grown up to be a professional anything, a lawyer, a doctor, something," said Jimenez, 30. "I just wish he was here." .....

Abuse risk seen higher as more kids live without two biological parents
By David Crary - Associated Press - Nov. 25, 2007
NEW YORK -- Six-year-old Oscar Jimenez Jr. was beaten to death in California, then buried under fertilizer and cement. Two-year-old Devon Shackleford was drowned in an Arizona swimming pool. Jayden Cangro, also 2, died after being thrown across a room in Utah.
In each case, as in many others every year, the alleged or convicted perpetrator had been the boyfriend of the child's mother - men thrust into father-like roles, which they tragically failed to embrace.
Every family is different. Some single mothers bring men into their lives who lovingly help raise children when the biological father is gone for good.
Nonetheless, many scholars and social workers who monitor America's families see the abusive-boyfriend syndrome as part of a broader, deeply worrisome trend. They note an ever-increasing share of America's children grow up in homes without both biological parents, and say the risk of child abuse is markedly higher in the nontraditional family structures. ..... continued
