LOS ANGELES - Kiefer Sutherland pleaded no contest Tuesday in his drunken driving case and will begin serving a 48-day jail sentence while his Fox TV drama "24" begins its winter production break in December.

The show's star agreed to serve 30 days for driving with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit of .08 percent, as well as 18 days for violating his probation for a 2004 drunken driving case, according to court records.

The actor was not in the courtroom and his attorney, Blair Berk, entered the plea agreement. A second misdemeanor charge, driving under the influence, was dropped. The charges stemmed from a traffic stop in Los Angeles last month.

As part of the arrangement, Sutherland must also enroll in an 18-month alcohol-education class and attend weekly alcohol-therapy sessions for six months.

"I'm very disappointed in myself for the poor judgment I exhibited recently, and I'm deeply sorry for the disappointment and distress this has caused my family, friends and co-workers on `24' and at 20th Century Fox," Sutherland said in a statement.

While early releases have been granted to others, including celebrities, because of jail crowding and other concerns, Sutherland must serve all of his time, according to the plea agreement. The sheriff also was specifically ordered to not release Sutherland to electronic monitoring.

The 40-year-old actor will officially be sentenced Dec. 21, when he must begin serving the 18 days in the county jail. It also is the same day his show begins its winter production break.

Sutherland then will have until July 1, 2008, to serve the remaining 30 days in jail. He will be on probation for five years and faces fines and a driving suspension, according to court documents.

The actor's plea arrangement ensures that production of "24" will not be interrupted, Fox officials said in a statement.

"Kiefer made clear to us at the time of his arrest that his first concern was the welfare of those he worked with and that he intended to do whatever was necessary to prevent shutting down the show because of his situation," the statement said.

"He told us that even if he had to sacrifice more time in custody in order to protect the show and the jobs of those who work with him, he would do so. From what occurred today, it is evident he is a man of his word," it said.

Sutherland also has a 1993 conviction for alcohol-related reckless driving, according to the city attorney's office.

He won a best actor Emmy last year for his performance as dashing federal counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer on "24."

I have to give him credit-he screwed up, but he's taking the whole sentence with a great attitude.

I sincerely hope he pulls it all together.

At least he's accepting responsibility for his actions and not whining and crying to mommy and daddy about it. Good for you Kiefer! (thats root beer in the mugs!)

Bad as it is and it sure is, I think a lot of him for admitting it and having concern for his fellow workers. Let this be the last time he ever does this again. Use a driver.

Why don't all the bad boys and girls in Hollywood use a driver, they sure can afford it! Admitting? He was arrested for the third time! We have pics of him so disgustingly drunk and taking his clothes off in bars, etc. How could he deny it!

Hey I like his acting! But there comes a time to either "grow up" or disintegrate! JMO

He will disintegrate, it is just a matter of time! My sister admitted her mistakes for 35 years God rest her soul. She died alone, and was found by the doorman who was letting the exterminator in. She went to rehab hundreds of times. I even drove her to Betty Ford. After her six weeks there, she went home and ended up in the hospital a week later. So, if I am harsh about this subject, it's because I lived with it for years, and saw someone absolutely beautiful inside and out turn into a shew. She lost her looks, her health, her mind all for want of a drink! "A thousand drinks was not enough, and one was too much!"

And I pray for her soul and miss her every single minute!

I'm sorry to hear about your sister :rose: and I know exactly what you're talking about - my father did the same thing.

Anyhow, no thanks for the link to the pics, I was just being goofy and didn't really mean it.

You just want to shake them and say, if not for you, for the people that love you, stop this insanity!

The pics would make you want to cry for this guy!

I'm with you totally on this. Drunk driving and drag racing are pet peeves of mine and I let everyone I know; know it. Sutherland was offered a free limo ride but instead chose to drove which proved poor judgment right then and I don't care if he "stepped up to the plate" or not. He could have hurt or killed someone.

A vehicle becomes a deadly weapon when driven by a drunk driver. It is just as bad if not equal to someone pointing a gun at you and pulling the trigger when they kill someone and if they don't hurt anyone thank God! IMO they are too lenient with charges for drunk driving.

A couple of years ago just a few blocks from me a man left his house to buy a pack of cigarettes -- not more than a 3 minute drive from his home. A van with children on their way to soccer practice after school approximately 4:30 pm; the van was at a complete stop behind another SUV at a red light when this man who never took his foot from the gas pedal plowed into the van and literally turned it into accordian and turned out he was drunk. Two 12 year olds were killed sitting in the middle of that van. The coach, his son (sitting in the front) and the two boys in the back were all hospitalized. I knew those kids and the coach. There is absolutely NO excuse for ANYONE to get behind the wheel while drinking.

Less than a year ago a 28 year old Navy man and another guy were drag racing down a main street. A neighbor of mine had gone to the local grocery store to get milk for her child and thank goodness her older daughter was home cause usually the other little girl is with her. Her car was broadsided by this man whose car was doing at least 120mph and the car immediately exploded and people standing around could only look in horror as there was absolutely nothing they could do. I remember her husband who happened to work across the street running over to see what happened only to realize it was his wife. The other car happened to be in another lane so wasn't directly responsible for her death but it takes two to dragrace and they both were arrested and were held equally responsible.

I just cannot conjure up any sympathy for drunk drivers or drag racers.

I agree! Why would someone so rich risk other peoples lives and their own when they most certainly could afford a driver?

And I pray for her soul and miss her every single minute! I used to drink and drive all the time. I am not proud of this but this is a fact. I have not been drunk in almost five years... I thank god everyday I did not kill anyone when I drove drunk. I think sometimes when people are rich they are above the law. I mean come on this is his third DUI what else is he going to say to the press... I dont have a drinking problem? I hope the time in jail gives him time to think about how many lives could have been changed if he would have caused an accident and killed innocent people... I think about that everyday... it helps me stay sober.
