Six shot dead at high-school party by off-duty police officer
• Small US town in shock over deaths of teenagers
• Gunman, 20, later killed by police sniper
The Guardian - UK - Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington - Monday October 8, 2007
A police officer in a small town in northern Wisconsin yesterday shot dead at least six young people, including a 14-year-old girl, at a house party before he was shot and killed by a police sniper.
News reports from Crandon, a close-knit town of 2,000 people, suggested the suspected shooter and his victims were part of the same circle of friends - high school students and recent graduates, who had gathered on Saturday night to celebrate a high school football victory.
Six people were reported killed at the party, in a white clapboard house in the centre of town. A seventh was critically injured in hospital yesterday.
At least three of the dead were high school students, including a 17-year-old believed to have been a former girlfriend of the suspected shooter. Another of the victims, Lindsey Stahl, was 14. Her mother, Jenny Stahl, told reporters her daughter had called home to ask permission to sleep at a friend's house on Saturday night.
"I'm waiting for somebody to wake me up right now. This is a bad, bad dream," the weeping mother told local reporters. "All I heard it was a jealous boyfriend and he went berserk. He took them all out."
The horror of the episode was deepened by the familiarity of many in Crandon with both victims and the suspected shooter, as well as the youth of all of those involved. .....

Thank you Odette for your diligent updates you always provide to us.
I believe we are going to find that the new boyfriend was at the house when all of this happened. I have read so many links today but I think he was the one slightly injured by shattering glass. I think he fired back at the perp. The neighbors first hear around 6 shots then another round of bullets then 8 more after that when they heard his tires screeching away from the scene.
There have been conflicting reports whether he was really killed by a sniper or whether it was self inflicted. I wonder if the new boyfriend who was a cop too may have wounded him.

CRANDON, Wis. -- An off-duty sheriff's deputy went on a shooting rampage at a home early Sunday in northern Wisconsin, killing six people and injuring a seventh before authorities fatally shot him, officials said.
The suspect was 20 years old and worked full-time as a Forest County deputy sheriff and part-time as a Crandon police officer, Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said. He would not release the suspect's name but said he was not working at the time of the shooting
A seventh shooting victim was in critical condition at a hospital in nearby Marshfield, said police Chief John Dennee. A Crandon police officer who fired back was treated for minor injuries and released.
Gary Bradley, mayor of the city of about 2,000, said earlier Sunday that the suspect had been brought down by a sniper, but Van Cleve would not confirm that officers shot the suspect.

Sheriff confirms deputies fired on off-duty cop who killed six in Crandon shooting rampage
By John Lee - Post-Crescent staff writer - October 7, 2007
CRANDON — Schools here will be closed Monday, and possibly most of the week, as this close-knit community mourns the shooting deaths of six young people.
Authorities say a 20-year-old off-duty police officer shot seven people early Sunday morning at a small duplex about a block from downtown, killing six and seriously wounding one. The mother of one of the victims said the suspect was angry with his ex-girlfriend, who had recently broken up with him.
Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley told reporters a police sniper killed the alleged shooter. Bradley told reporters the man was a full-time Forest County Sheriff’s deputy and part-time Crandon police officer.
Crandon schools Supt. Richard Peters identified the gunman as Tyler Peterson, a graduate of the high school that has about 300 students. Tyler Peterson was deputized in January, according to Wisconsin online court records.
Peters said the shootings of three students and three others who were no more than three years removed from high school have rocked the community. “They are people we’ve patted on the back, encouraged and bantered with. It’s hard to imagine they are gone,” Peters said. .....
Excerpt: Authorities still have not released the names of the victims, although one is 14-year-old Lindsey Stahl, said her mother, Jenny Stahl, 39.
She said her daughter called her Saturday night and asked whether she could sleep over at a friend’s house. Jenny Stahl agreed.
“I’m waiting for somebody to wake me up right now. This is a bad, bad dream,” the weeping mother said. “All I heard it was a jealous boyfriend and he went berserk. He took them all out.”

MADISON, Wis. - A 20-year-old lawman shattered the calm of a small logging town in the North Woods of Wisconsin on Sunday morning, crashing a house party and shooting to death six high school students and recent graduates, police said. .....
Excerpt: Savannah Cleereman, 14, knew Lindsey and the five others who were killed. "Lindsey was my best friend since 1st grade," she said. "It's just the way she died. She didn't deserve it. None of them deserved to die at all. I had six friends, but they all died."
Cleereman said she had been invited to the same house party but didn't go because she was too tired from an early volleyball meet.
Instead, she and a friend—the sister of a young man at the party—stayed at Cleereman's house together. The two learned of the shooting Sunday morning when Cleereman's friend received text messages on her phone from people saying they were sorry to hear about her brother.

LOVE-RIFT ROOKIE POLICEMAN SHOOTS DEAD 6 AT TEEN PARTY
express.co.uk - By Sarah Westcott - Monday October 8, 2007
A ROOKIE policeman who had just split with his girlfriend shot dead six people at a house party yesterday.
Five of the victims were believed to be teenagers at the party, while the sixth was said to be another policeman.
The gunman, a sheriff’s deputy aged 19 or 20, was last night reported to have been shot dead after a manhunt in America’s Mid-West.
Witnesses said the crazed officer opened fire at the party in Crandon, in northern Wisconsin, which has just 2,000 residents.
During the manhunt, authorities said the entire close-knit community was under lock-down.
Dozens of residents were barricaded into the main street of the town as the hunt intensified for the gunman.
Residents said he was a newly- qualified policeman who had been a star player in the local school’s football team.
A waitress at the town’s Cafe Manoomin said: “The gunman went ballistic because his girlfriend broke up with him.
“He was so upset and just went off on one. We are terrified. .....

1 hurt; hours later, SWAT team kills shooter

http://i13.tinypic.com/4mx4d3l.gif » TMJ4 VIDEO: A local law enforcement employee went on a shooting rampage early Sunday in remote northern Wisconsin, killing at least six people. The suspect also is dead.
AUDIO INTERVIEWS: Journal Sentinel reporter Ellen Graber interviewed Jenny Stahl, Ryan Coulter and Bill Farr, pastor of Praise Chapel Community Church.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary Saturday night when Tyler Peterson met up with a bunch of friends in a parking lot behind a Crandon bank.
They talked about hunting, what to do later that night. Typical stuff. That was it. It was 8:30 p.m.
But before the sun would rise, Peterson, a 20-year-old, off-duty Forest County sheriff's deputy and part-time City of Crandon police officer, would be suspected of storming into his ex-girlfriend's house and killing her and five other young people at a party, including two of his best childhood buddies.
Another teen was critically wounded.
Peterson would later end up dead, shot by the Crandon SWAT team.
"He must have just snapped," said a close friend who had known Peterson since they were in kindergarten and talked to him in the parking lot Saturday night. "He seemed fine (at 8:30 p.m.)." .....

Residents question how off-duty deputy who killed 6 in Wisconsin passed background check
clarionledger.com - October 8, 2007
CRANDON, WIS. — The residents Tyler Peterson was hired to protect and serve can't understand how the 20-year-old who shot six of their young people and critically injured another could have passed a background check to become a sheriff's deputy.
Peterson was shot to death after opening fire early Sunday on a group of students and recent graduates who had gathered for pizza and movies on their high school's homecoming weekend. Peterson was off-duty from his full-time job as a Forest County deputy sheriff; he also was a part-time Crandon police officer.
David Franz, 36, who lives with his wife two houses from the duplex where the shooting occurred, said it was hard to accept that someone in law enforcement was the gunman.
"The first statement we said to each other was, how did he get through the system?" Franz said. "How do they know somebody's background, especially that young? It is disturbing, to say the least."
Sheriff Keith Van Cleve said he would meet with state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen on Monday morning to discuss the case. .....

Homecoming Pizza Party Hit By Murder Spree
wibw.com - Last Updated: 6:44 AM Oct 8, 2007
(CBS/AP) The residents Tyler Peterson was hired to protect and serve in Crandon, Wisconsin, population 2000, can't understand how the 20-year-old who shot six of their young people and critically injured another could have passed a background check to become a sheriff's deputy.
Excerpt: The victims include Jordanne Murray, 18, Peterson's former longtime sweetheart, Katrina McCorkle, 18, Leanna Thomas, 18, Bradley Schultz, 20, Aaron Smith, (age not available) and Lindsey Stahl, 14, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Charlie Nietzel, 19, of the neighboring town of Pickerel was wounded. He was in critical condition late Sunday at a local hospital.
Peterson would later end up dead, shot by the Crandon SWAT team. .....
Excerpt: One victim, 20-year-old Bradley Schultz, was a third-year student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who was home to visit his friends, said his aunt, Sharon Pisarek.
"We still don't have many details, but from what they've told us, there was a girl next to him and he was covering her, protecting her," she said, sobbing. "He was loved by everybody. He was everybody's son. Senseless."
David Franz's wife, Marci, said she was awakened by the gunshots.
"I heard probably five or six shots, a short pause and then five or six more," she said. "I wasn't sure if it was gunfire initially. I thought some kids were messing around and hitting a nearby metal building."
Then she heard eight louder shots and tires squealing, she said.
"I was just about to get up and call it in, and I heard sirens," she said. "There's never been a tragedy like this here. There's been individual incidents, but nothing of this magnitude."

CRANDON, Wis. -- The mayor of Crandon said Sunday's shooting rampage in his town was apparently a crime driven by passion.
Gary Bradley said it looks like the sheriff's deputy who killed six people was angered by a girlfriend who was involved with someone else. Bradley says the truth about the apparent love triangle will probably never be known, because the girl was one of those killed.

So I guess the boyfriend wasn't there. Maybe him being a cop was a rumor. Maybe she liked one of the guys she had long known and been friends with.
Or maybe he thought the guy was in there with his ex-girlfriend when he burst in and went absolutely stark raving mad and shot them all.
But if she had begun to date the other cop and he wasn't there he has to be thanking God today that he wasn't.
It leaves so many questions but the one foremost in my mind was why did they hire such a young man to be a full time Deputy and part time police officer? Did they give him a psychological examination before he entered the force?
I would assume he used his service revolver in this crime. Imo putting guns in the hands of the immature and letting them become police officers is a dangerous thing for all of society.

wsaw.com - Reporter: Associated Press - Last Updated: 11:15 AM Oct 8, 2007
CRANDON, Wis. (AP) -- The father of Tyler Peterson says nothing the family can say about his son now, would be believeable to most people.
27-old Tyler Peterson is the Forest County sheriff's deputy and part-time Crandon police officer who opened fire on a seven young people gathered at a homecoming weekend party, killing six and critically wounding the seventh.
Peterson was shot to death at a home north of Crandon hours after the seven were shot.
Relatives say one of the victims had a romantic relationship with Peterson and recently broke up with him.
Steve Peterson says it's very trying for his family.
He says his family will draft a statement to the public.

GUNMAN TOLD FRIEND HE LOST CONTROL AFTER BEING CALLED A "WORTHLESS PIG"

It makes one wonder about the nursery rhyme: "Sticks and Stones...." doesn't it? At first, I wondered how the sniper felt, then I realized he was just shooting another killer to protect his community from more senselessness. Whatever respect the killer may have had was turned to total contempt the second he fired his first shot at the innocent victims. I cannot express the sorrow I feel for those victims, and their families, including the parents of the murderer. I don't know what kind of officer he was before, but "worthless pig" doesn't begin to describe the contempt he has brought upon his memory.

I really think much more was probably said to him other than "worthless pig." It was the combination I feel of the hurt and rage he felt by losing his longtime childhood sweetheart and when he came there to beg her back it did not go well. I never believed that nursery rhyme. I do feel words can hurt very deeply especially if ones emotions are already raw. Imo this guy was way too immature to handle police work although I doubt a city of 2000 had much crime going on.
Imo he struck back like a kid who had been humiliated but he used an adult weapon to seek his revenge. I don't think he was ever going to be arrested alive. He knew all about suicide by cop and he knew one shot from the sniper and it would be all over for him but what he has left behind will never be erased. He will continue to haunt that town but I do think they will gather strength from each other.
I think most are in shock over TPs violent outburst that has destroyed so many innocent lives including his own family. He seemed to be well liked before this and had great promise. People are wrestling with how the Tyler they had always known could have done something this senseless and horrific. I don't think the answers will ever come for any of the families.

Shooter sought refuge with friend's family
jsonline.com - By RAQUEL RUTLEDGE - Posted: Oct. 8, 2007
Tyler Peterson showed up at Mike Kegley's door at 7:30 Sunday morning as the rest of Crandon awoke to the grisly news of a mass slaying.
With blood on his pants, his semiautomatic rifle in hand and pistol under the back of his shirt, Peterson started talking about how he lost control. How he went to his on-again, off-again girlfriend's house in the middle of the night and instead of patching up their relationship, argued with her. How others, gathered at her home for a movie-and-pizza party, called him a "worthless pig."
The Forest County sheriff's deputy and part-time Crandon police officer said he was sorry, that he had just "lost it." He'd shot seven of his friends, including two of his best childhood buddies.
Kegley's wife, Mary, discreetly called 911. She and her son, a lifelong friend of Peterson's, coaxed the work-issued assault rifle he had proudly shown off just days earlier from his hand. He wouldn't part with his police-issued pistol, though. .....
Excerpt: About an hour later, Kegley estimated, Peterson returned to the house. He said he had met with his mom and grandmother and that his mom spoke softly to him.
"She told him she loved him, no matter what happened," Kegley said.
Peterson said he had called all the victims' families to say how sorry he was. He talked about what he should do, how he would surrender only to his boss, Crandon Police Chief John Dennee, and how he wanted to speak with District Attorney Leon Stenz.

Statement from gunman's family
Posted: Oct. 8, 2007
Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and their friends. We are grieving for your losses. We are very sorry for what has happened. This huge tragedy has deeply affected everyone, including us. We also feel a tremendous amount of guilt and shame for the horrible acts Tyler committed. We are struggling to respond, like most of you. We do not know what we should do. Like us many of you are asking why and looking for answers. There is nothing that happened before or after yesterday's events that has given any insight into why. We may never receive the answers we all seek. Like those close to Tyler we are in shock and disbelief he would do such terrible things. This was not the Tyler we knew and loved. We do not know how to act. We want to express our love and support to everyone affected, but are unsure what would be apppropiate. We are hurting for all of your losses, as well as ours. May God bless you all. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Gunman's suicide suspected
Authorities give account; 7th victim is upgraded
jsonline.com - By MEG JONES - Posted: Oct. 9, 2007
Crandon - Of the dozens of bullets fired by Tyler Peterson as he mowed down friends and Crandon High School classmates in a fatal flurry, authorities said Tuesday, he apparently saved the last few for himself.
Evidence shows the 20-year-old Forest County sheriff's deputy and part-time Crandon police officer likely committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with his .40-caliber handgun as law enforcement officers closed in on him, hours after Peterson killed six young people, said Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.
Peterson left behind a chaotic, blood-soaked scene inside a white duplex where two victims died while trying to hide in a bedroom closet and another victim survived only by playing dead.
Peterson was hit by four bullets - one to his bicep, which came from a long distance, and three to his head. Two of the shots were nonfatal wounds underneath Peterson's chin, with the fatal shot entering the right side of his head, Van Hollen said. All three head wounds showed signs the gun was held against the skin.
In a chilling timeline released at a news briefing Tuesday afternoon, Van Hollen also answered questions that have dogged investigators as the public wondered what happened early Sunday.
For the first time, authorities gave an account of the scene inside the home, with three bodies - those of Bradley Schultz, 20; Lindsey Stahl, 14; and Aaron Smith - found near a couch. The body of Jordanne Murray, 18, was found inside the kitchen, and the bodies of Lianna Thomas, 18, and Katrina McCorkle, 18, were found inside or just outside a bedroom closet, where they apparently were trying to hide.
The only person to survive the attack, 21-year-old Charlie Neitzel, apparently tried to reason with Peterson inside the kitchen but was shot in the leg. He continued to plead with Peterson before being shot two more times. Peterson stopped shooting only when Neitzel played dead, Van Hollen said.
Neitzel was upgraded from serious to fair condition Tuesday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. .....

Gunman killed himself, Wisconsin officials say
chicagotribune.com - By Megan Twohey | Tribune staff reporter - 9:12 PM CDT, October 9, 2007
CRANDON, Wis - Growing up in Wisconsin's remote, northern forests, Tyler Peterson loved to hunt and fish. As a teenager, he was not a loner or an outsider, and he dreamed of becoming a law enforcement officer, friends and family said.
The 20-year-old had a longtime girlfriend, Jordanne Murray, who bubbled with warmth. He had a fun sense of humor, according to a friend whom he once invited to prom. After high school, Peterson realized his goal and became a part-time officer with the Crandon Police Department and a full-time deputy with the Forest County Sheriff's Office.
But this life, by all accounts a normal one, came to a gruesome end Sunday when Peterson shot and killed Murray and five other young people. Hours later, Peterson, on the run from the very officers with whom he worked, took a handgun to his head and shot three times, officials disclosed Tuesday.
Cornered at a remote cabin in the woods near this community of 2,000, Peterson was shot in the arm by police on Sunday afternoon. Then he aimed twice under his chin before taking the gun to the right side of his head, Wisconsin Atty Gen. J.B Van Hollen said at a press conference.
With other massacres of this kind, friends and family had seen signs that the killers were capable of such violence.
With Tyler Peterson, that was apparently not the case.
"He was just your normal, average guy," said Andrea Walentowski, a long-time friend who had planned to go to prom with Peterson before he decided to go with Murray.
Walentowski said Peterson had a tendency to get upset over little things in high school. Friends would snap back, "Tyler, cut it out!" .....

Father of Crandon shootings victim, Tyler Peterson’s ex-girlfriend, discovered massacre
postcrescent.com - By Kate McGinty - Post-Crescent staff writer - Posted October 9, 2007
CRANDON — The first person to see the results of Tyler Peterson’s murderous rampage early Sunday was the father of one of the victims, the ex-girlfriend whose rejection apparently sent Peterson off the tracks.
Peterson barged into the downstairs duplex of his ex-girlfriend, Jordanne Murray, after an argument and opened fire with an AR-15 rifle. He left six dead, including Murray, and one seriously wounded, before fleeing.
Shortly after Peterson finished firing approximately 30 shots, Murray’s father rushed from upstairs to find some of the young people lying shot on a couch, said Mariah Walentowski, a close friend of Lindsey Stahl, who at 14 years old was the youngest of those murdered.
Murray’s father told people who had gathered at Praise Chapel Community Church following the shootings that he “didn’t want to believe it. He was just hoping it was a bad dream,” said Walentowski, 13.
“He was crying and he wouldn’t stop,” she said.
t’s not uncommon for graduates of tiny Crandon High School to maintain tight ties to their friends who still are in school, and last weekend’s homecoming football game was a natural draw for students and alumni alike. Friday night a group of Crandon friends — including all seven gunshot victims — attended the Crandon Cardinals 34-0 thumping of Florence.
Saturday night they rented some movies and headed back to Murray’s apartment in the duplex she shares with her parents, Walentowski said.
Sometime after 2 a.m., neighbors began hearing loud arguments coming from inside the duplex, said Austin Sheldon, 12.
“(They) heard people yelling and calling each other names like worthless pig and no good you know (and) swearing at each other,” Sheldon said.
About 2:45 a.m., her family heard gunshots from their home more than three blocks away from the duplex, Walentowski said.
As residents began making pre-dawn phone calls checking on the source of the gunshots, parents began trying to track down their children. .....

I know in Iowa that law enforcement cannot be under 21. I just can't believe this happened, my husband is an officer and i am just wondering how people are going to think about police now. They usually give a psych exam in Iowa, i dont know about other states but you have to take the MMPI test before they even think of hiring you.

Gunman had a choice, unlike his victims
jsonline.com - Mike Nichols - Posted: Oct. 14, 2007
How many victims were there in Crandon?
Tyler Peterson gunned down Lindsey Stahl, Bradley Schultz and Aaron Smith near a couch inside a house just off the town's main street nine nights ago.
Left the three of them lying there.
He killed Jordanne Murray, the girl everyone describes as his onetime girlfriend, but a teenager who surely should be remembered for something other than that, in the kitchen.
Lianna Thomas and Katrina McCorkle were slain while trying to hide - scared beyond imagining, no doubt - in a bedroom closet.
That's six kids and young adults all gunned down before they had a chance to accomplish even a fraction of what they could have.
Charlie Neitzel was also gunned down while pleading for his life, but lived. The 21-year-old was victim No. 7 - which makes a very long list. .....

'The town loved that young man'
Memories in Crandon of genial youth hold no clue to the gunman he became
jsonline.com - By TOM HELD - Posted: Oct. 13, 2007
Crandon - If Tyler Peterson was simply a good boy turned into a bad man - a sentiment repeated over and over by his stunned neighbors in this small city - the transformation took only moments.
Until he sprayed bullets into his former girlfriend and five others at her apartment early last Sunday, Peterson's reputation in the town he called home for all of his 20 years was nearly as pristine as the white house in which he was raised.
Even after the killing spree, which ended when the off-duty Forest County sheriff's deputy took his own life, the few people who would talk to reporters about watching him grow up in Crandon spoke only highly of him.
He wasn't a crazed killer, but the boy who smiled while he worked the cash register at his uncle's convenience store.
He wasn't a homicidal jilted lover, but the young police officer who shot pool with the kids at the Youth and Senior Center.
And he wasn't a desperate fugitive, but a beloved grandson and brother from a well-respected family. .....

Released 911 calls don't end questions
Services for victims begin in Crandon amid investigation
jsonline.com - By GINA BARTON - Oct. 11, 2007
Early Sunday morning, Jean Childers calls 911 from her home on Hazeldell Ave. in Crandon, reporting automatic gunfire, or maybe firecrackers. Calmly, she tells the dispatcher she can't tell where the shots are coming from.
She would soon learn Tyler Peterson was in the building next door, killing his former girlfriend and five others.
On 911 recordings released Thursday, Childers agrees to be put on hold as Crandon police officer Greg Carter's panicked radio call echoes through the dispatch center.
"That's the shooter," Carter says, breathless. "I believe it was Deputy Peterson. My squad has been shot. A .223 round. It went through my squad. He is shooting to kill."
Tires squeal as Carter says the bullets missed his head by just centimeters.
The time is 2:48 a.m. .....

Crandon 9-1-1 calls from Kegleys
todaystmj4.com - Charles Benson - Oct 17, 2007
New 9-1-1 calls from Crandon give us insight into what Tyler Peterson was like, a few hours after his shooting rampage.
Charles Benson has more on the 9-1-1 calls.
Peterson spent his final hours at the home of his friends Mike and Mary Kegley. They claim to have made 20 9-1-1 calls but investigators say only three exist.
Forest County 9-1-1. Yes this is Mike Kegley. We've got that Tyler Peterson at the house right now.
In three 9-1-1 calls made to Crandon Police Chief John Dennee the Kegleys never panicked.
Dennee: Does He want me to come up there? What's his story?
Mary Kegley: Uhm he wants actually to wait until tomorrow. .....

New Details in 911 Calls Released From Crandon Shootings
wsaw.com - Reporter: Associated Press - Oct 16, 2007
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- New 911 tapes show a north woods couple fed Tyler Peterson coffee and soda and relayed messages to police for him after the off-duty sheriff's deputy sought refuge at their home in the hours after he gunned down six people in Crandon.
In one call, Mike Kegley tells Crandon Police Chief John Dennee that he and Peterson were just sitting and talking and Peterson seemed calm. Kegley said managed to slip away to call Dennee by telling Peterson he was going for another soda.
The calls shed a little more light on what happened after Peterson broke into his ex-girlfriend's Crandon apartment in the early morning hours October seventh and fatally shot her and five others who were having a pizza-and-movie party. A seventh person was shot but survived.
Peterson later showed up at the Kegley property, where he eventually died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
Here are details from the recordings released today:
-- At 9:15 a.m., Mike Kegley calls Forest County dispatchers and tells them Peterson is at his house. A dispatcher tells him he will contact other officers. .....
