Man burned child, framed man over ex-girlfriend

DES MOINES (AP) -- A Waterloo man was sentenced to 35 years in prison Monday for burning his ex-girlfriend's 2-year-old son with a cigar and trying to frame her new boyfriend with drug charges. Chad Bennett, 36, entered a plea deal on several charges, avoiding what could have been 89 years in prison if convicted on a series of crimes stemming from stalking his ex-girlfriend last year.
Bennett, a former adjunct instructor at Hawkeye Community College, pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, willful injury and assault while participating in a felony for entering the woman's home and burning her son in May 2006. The boy had burns on his forehead, right hand, middle back and buttocks, records state.
Bennett also pleaded to three counts of third-degree burglary and manufacturing methamphetamine for allegedly creating meth that was placed in the new boyfriend's truck last year.
Bennett also pleaded to two stalking charges. According to his ex-girlfriend, she and her new boyfriend found Bennett outside her home in the early morning hours of July 4 dressed in black. Later in the day police found Bennett driving near the home wearing a long-haired wig.
