Pregnant Woman Shot, Killed in Front of Her Children

WATTS, Sept. 24, 2007 (KABC-TV) - The search continues Monday for a man accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend in front of her two children.

The woman's two children were witnesses to the murder. The two sons ages 4 and 14 watched as their mother was shot to death Sunday night in Watts. The suspect is woman's boyfriend, identified as 33-year-old Stephen Picart.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Sunday. The victim, identified as Sharon Carter, was driving on the 9600 block of Compton Avenue with her boyfriend and two kids. Carter's 14-year-old son was in the passenger seat and her 4-year-old was in the backseat with Picart.

Police say Carter and Picart got into an argument, and that's when Picart shot and killed her. Picart allegedly fired four rounds from the backseat as Carter was driving. Carter died at the scene.

According to investigators, the victim's 14-year-old son had to steer the car to the side of the road as his mother slumped to the side. Police say Picart then got out off the car and took off on foot. The victim's two sons were left in shock after watching all of this happen.

"The hardest thing is to tell a 4-year-old child that they will never see their mother again," said Christi Antwine, the children's aunt. .....

From a Times Staff Writer - A 31-year-old woman was shot to death Sunday afternoon in front of her two children while she was driving her sport utility vehicle in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Police said the victim, Sharon Carter of Los Angeles, was shot in the back of the head, apparently by another occupant in the vehicle. It occurred about 5 p.m. in the 9600 block of Compton Avenue.

Authorities said the SUV stopped after crashing into two parked cars, and the assailant fled.

Police said they were searching for the victim's estranged boyfriend as the suspected assailant. He was identified as Stephen Picart of Los Angeles, described as a black man in his 30s.

Authorities said the assailant drove away from the scene in a 2002 Nissan Altima with the license plate 5VFN831. Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to call police.

Carter's children, ages 4 and 14, were passengers in the SUV when the shooting occurred, police said.

LAPD seeks gunman who killed woman in front of her children

Police this morning were searching for a man they believe shot and killed a woman while she was driving him and her two children in South Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

Stephen Mark Picart, 33, is suspected of shooting Sharon Carter, 31, with a handgun, said Officer Karen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Carter was shot in the back of the head about 5 p.m., apparently after she and Picart had an argument, Smith said.

Neither of the children, ages 4 and 14, was injured, Smith said.

After Carter was shot, her SUV hit two cars in the 9600 block of South Compton Avenue, Smith said. When the SUV came to a stop, the gunman ran north on Compton Avenue.

Police believe Picart and Carter once lived together, but they were uncertain whether they had been as of Sunday.

Picart may be in a green 2002 Nissan Altima with license plate 5VFN831, Smith said.

LOS ANGELES (KNX)-- Police are currently looking for a man who shot his girlfriend to death while he was riding along with her and her two young children in an SUV Sunday afternoon.

Police say that Sharon Carter, 31 years old, was shot Sunday around 5pm. Immediately after the shooting the victim's car collided with two other vehicles on the 9600 block of Compton Avenue. The alleged shooter, who police identified as 33-year-old Mark Picart of Los Angeles, fled on foot from the scene.

Picart may currently be driving a green 2002 Nissan Altima, license plate number: 5VFN831.

A man suspected of killing his girlfriend in front of her two sons walked into a police station in South Los Angeles on Monday morning and turned himself in, police said.

Sharon Carter, 31, died almost immediately after being shot in the head while driving in the 9600 block of South Compton Avenue about 5 p.m. Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department authorities said.

Carter was driving her boyfriend Stephen Mark Picart, 33, and her two sons, 4 and 14, when the couple began fighting, authorities said. Investigators allege that Picart pulled out a gun and shot Carter.

The car went out of control and smashed into parked cars, and Picart fled, investigators said. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. Relatives said Monday that she was pregnant. Neither of the boys were injured.

A short time after the shooting, the 4-year-old greeted his uncle at the police station by pointing a finger to his temple, imitating the shot that killed his mother, said Dwayne Loughridge, brother-in-law to Carter. "He's been crying a lot," Loughridge said.

The older boy "is not saying a whole lot, not talking a whole lot," Loughridge said. "But he said, 'Uncle, I cannot help that nightmare from playing back in my mind.' "

Both children were very emotional after the shooting, said LAPD South Bureau homicide Det. Sam Marullo. They have been placed with relatives. Neither child was Picart's. .....

(CBS) COMPTON, Calif. - A man accused of fatally shooting his pregnant girlfriend in the head as she drove through Watts with her two children in the back seat was charged on Wednesday with two counts of murder, according to prosecutors.

Stephen Mark Picart is charged with the death of the unborn child and 31-year-old Sharon Carter, prosecutors said.

Picart, who surrendered Monday at the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station, is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon at the Compton courthouse. .....

Just, wow. I sometimes wonder what drives some people to want to do that to a fellow human being (or any living creature, for that matter). Hate perpetuates hate. I'm not pro death penalty but reading about cases like these, I think some "people" don't deserve any better.

LOS ANGELES— A man suspected of shooting and killing his pregnant girlfriend while she was driving him and her two children was charged Wednesday with two counts of murder.

Stephen Mark Picart, 33, is accused in the death of Sharon Carter and the unborn baby believed to be his child.

Picart made his first court appearance in Compton Superior Court. He did not enter a plea because he doesn't yet have a defense lawyer. Authorities said it was unclear whether a public defender or private attorney would represent him. Picart's number was unlisted.

Picart was ordered jailed on $4 million bail. His arraignment was scheduled for Oct. 5. .....
