View Full Version : Final Decision: Should there be a limit on greenies you can give in 24 Hours??
CinderL.

I don't think there should be a limit on how many greenies you can give in a 24hr. period. Why is that. There is a limit on how many you can give to one poster, but why the limit on how many in a certain time period??? I don't get it?

CinderL is referring to rep points and the little green boxes in the upper right hand corner of your posts that shows your rep level.

What is a greenies? Excuse my ignorance if this is something all members know!My guess would be POSitive REPutation, thereby giving posters the green boxes or lines or greenies. Mostly, I use the feature to send short messages and UNLIMITED icons!
Not sure why there is any limit unless it is to keep people from being pests and sending 1000s of short messages. :hat:

You could be right. Sometimes I think it is better to use the rep (greenie) function to say....good job....rather than to take up space on a thread. That is my thinking anyway. :D

Since there is no limit to the number of exceptional posts that can be made in a twenty four hour period, it is ridiculous to limit the rewarding of them.
I don't put total confidence in the rep points, however. I've seem some pretty obnoxious posters with inflated reps; probably awarded by their fellow derailers and Other Multiple Personalities.

I think the number of greenies compared to the number of posts tells a story.
When I see someone with less than 100 posts and they already have 5 or 6 greenies I say to myself, "Got to check this out. This person must have some really good debating skills/observations/opinions."

Going by your theory, I nominate Sunset for rookie of the year. Nine greenies with eight posts!
But then is jlhnokc, 11 greenies with 10 posts better?

I just dropped by the Lurker Challenge and gave mel some positive reputation. He went from 1 to 3 green boxes. So, if 5 or 6 people do the same, he will have 11 greenies with 1 post!
I don't think the system was designed that way but that's the way it works. As I said before, it is a great way to send short messages.http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j174/MoonChat2/us4allmacarena.gif

Too funny- Greenies are dog biscuts where I live. They are organic breath freshners for dogs, healthy snacks or whatever and I thought this thread was about giving too many dog biscuts to a pet every day. :D
My dog, Kato, can resume chewing on his Greenie now.

Okay-here's my take on it.
Each person should have the capablity of giving only one greenie to each post-period. No going back to give another greenie to each post after you posted the first one. This way, nobody can give 100 greenies to their best friend for each post they make.
They should be able to give unlimited greenies, though.
For example-
Member A makes 6 posts in a particular day. 2 of them are outstanding. Each post should be able to get 1 greenie from me. They should also be able to get 1 greenie from each other person that thinks it's an outstanding post.
Member B makes 20 posts-and I like them ALL. That's one greenie for each of 20 posts.
Once you give a greenie to a particular post, that ability should be permanantly blocked for the person who gave the greenie.
But NOT blocked for the entire thread...or for all other members.
Yeah-I know-you'd need a whole new program to make it that way.
Just my thoughts.

How can that be? Is it because instead of posting welcome on the thread, people are giving rep and saying welcome and so it ups the greenies? I am really amazed by this. Not that it matters, but have always wondered how someone could have 1 post and 6 greenies. I also have wondered how a continuously rude poster can have more greenies than a poster that posts nothing but the facts in a polite mannerism.

Yes. I often welcome new members with a Howdy using the rep feature rather than a post. Or I say Hi to other posters. I see that as a problem, if other people are only using it for Post of the Month or some other special situation. Just think everyone should be aware that others may see the REP feature as other than meaning a person gives great posts.

This is about greenies, but with a slightly different subject.
I have noticed that there is a limit that is displayed and that once that is full, it doesn't show an accurate count of how many rep compliments a poster has. I still like to acknowledge these posters, but wish that it showed to all. Alot of great posters have that lined filled and wouldn't it be a good idea that after so many rep points, that they get another color to indicate they are super posters? Just an idea, I think so many here make great points and wish we could reward them for their contribution.

I do the same thing FD. Why would that be considered not using it seriously? I think it gives the new person a warm welcome and makes them feel comfortable. I think some people are taking it TOO seriously, rather than just using it socially and rewarding. Thats what I thought it was for.

I think the greenies should only be used to reward great posts, NOT used to send quick notes and welcomes.
I send so-and-so a "quick" note using the greenie\rep system...they reply back the same way. New people who haven't made "connections" here, to communicate with people, have no one to exchange rep points with. It's not a fair way to use the system.
They are-after all our "rep" system.
If you're using them to send quick notes and welcomes, how does that fall into the catagory of 'deserving" rep points??
It DOESN'T.
And anyway-there's the "quick post" box at the bottom of every page. You could always use that or the PMs to send notes,
Greenies should only be used to reward a great post.
Only my opinion...

The reputation system has become a caricature of itself. It doesn't in any way shape or form represent a poster's reputation. We've got brand new posters acquiring fantastic reputations before their post count reaches double figures.
I thought we were going to get the opportunity to opt out of it?
How about a poll to see how many people would like out of the rep system now? I like the comments and would be happy to keep that, but the public reputation monitor is a joke.

In the forum I regularly post in (www.tittybarjones.com if you want to check it out, not a crime related site though) we use "karma" points for our reps and we have negative as well as positive. However, we don't take them seriously at all. On the other hand the forum has a very small user base since it's fairly new, so perhaps in the future it will become a problem. I'm not used to a larger forum like this one, so I'm not sure how relevant the rep points actually are...especially since there are no negative rep points...I think those make a big difference. JMO:)

Personally I love the rep faction, it validates an opinion or someone's position in a positive way.
What I am grateful for, is that this discussion has finally eraced that gap toothed laughing icon which was used to heckle a post. I'd like to see the punching icon go the same route.

Besides that, Chambord, I agree, I do not like tha laughing icon. It has been used one to many times to laugh AT me, not with me. :seeya:
Eventually it will die out... I hope LOL imo

Excellent point, and I definitely agree with the rest of your post, too. Heck, I tried to give you some "greenies" for this post, but I guess I have to spread some rep points around before I can do that.

A greenie/greener has a different meaning in this part of the world. It's something icky which originates from the nostril.
I'm having a chuckle at the thought of what a casual visitor from the UK might think this thread is about...

How about this???
No limit on how many greenies you can give in a day, but limit it to 1 per person\per thread.
For example-if I give a greenie to Odette for the "Madeliene News updates" thread, I can't give another on that thread, but I can give her one on a JBR thread, or any other one I like.
I can also give greenies to anyone else I think presents a great thread, but not more than one greenie per thread.
I think using them to say hi, or welcome or to pass quick notes is an abuse of the system, though...

Wasn't there a movie where there was a shortage of food and greenies were given out only to find out they were humans that were killed to downsize the population?
Anyone remember it? IIRC it was called "Soylent Green"
;) I liked the movie.

the greenies will be revised given that there is no longer the ability to dock points with negative reps the points needed to obtain greenies will increase. Changes will be noted in the house rules. Limitations will remain
I'm disappointed that you plan on revising the *greenies* element. It was a unigue feature to this board that allowed us to reward posts that impacted the subject discussed and encouraged a greater partcipation. Not to mention it was fun when used in the manner it was intended. I had some great comments from posters on my CP, not just from my parent board, but from other peeps who dropped by.

100%. I cant tell you how many times I leave a little message like `well said` or `Agree with you` or even a private message thats just short and sweet. I love how easy it is to do this without having to use the private messages which is much more time consuming and formal.
I also love recieving little messages that are attached to the relevent coresponding post..... and do not miss the negative rating system at all.
Oh...and re the topic at hand. I actually dont mind what the limitation is. I can understand if it gets too difficult to have too many variations from a programer point of view. I dont think anyone wants to recieve too many comments anyway, so Im ok with a limitation of giving one per poster per day.
I would love to see some new colors for those at their maximum level of green. I vote for hot pink as the next level color!!!
I personally think that the icons could be updated. There are too many negative icons as a % of total. Other sites I post on have very friendly (self mocking) icons that reflect humour and modesty. eg embaresment red face, sweating/ close call icon, lust icon etc. The icons here are more mean imo and I rarely use them. eg the laughing one looks like an evil murderer!!!!
So my vote is for more funny icons, and more `positive` colors so the rating can continue indefinately!
