Pennsylvania Teen Stabs Cheerleader Girlfriend to Death
Thursday, August 16, 2007

MONROEVILLE, Pa. — A tumultuous teenage relationship ended tragically late Wednesday when, according to police, an 18-year-old stabbed his cheerleader girlfriend to death a day after her 16th birthday.

Moments later, John Mullarkey Jr. came out of Demi Cuccia's home and slit his own throat, police and witnesses said. He remained in critical condition Thursday, though police described his prognosis as poor.

The two-year relationship was well-known in the high school, where Cuccia was a cheerleader and Mullarkey had just graduated. Friends referred to the relationship as "delicate" and "on and off."

Donna Walko, 48, a neighbor, described Mullarkey as possessive and jealous.

PITTSBURGH — An 18-year-old man who allegedly asked police after his arrest if he could be held responsible for doing something while on medication was ordered to stand trial on a charge of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend.
John Mullarkey Jr., of Monroeville, stabbed Demi Cuccia, 16, on Aug. 15 and then slashed his own throat, police said. His attorney said the teen was taking Accutane, an acne drug that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has linked to episodes of suicide and depression.
Allegheny County Detective Mike Kuma testified Friday that he communicated with Mullarkey using a message board while Mullarkey was recovering from his neck wound. Kuma said Mullarkey asked him, without prompting, about a medicated person being held responsible for his actions.
After the hearing, defense attorney Robert Stewart said he's not sure if he will use his client's use of Accutane as a defense at trial because, at this point, he's not willing to concede that Mullarkey stabbed Cuccia.

Ex-boyfriend to be tried in Gateway student's death
Defense says medication led suspect to fatally stab cheerleader

Saturday, September 15, 2007

By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

First came the "blood-curdling screams," followed by the mortally wounded cheerleader clutching her midsection as she staggered into a neighbor's arms.
"She must've seen me because she ran straight towards me," Gail Slomer, testifying at a preliminary hearing yesterday, said of 16-year-old Demi Cuccia, the Gateway High School cheerleader who was killed Aug. 15.
Her ex-boyfriend, John J. Mullarkey Jr., 18, has been charged with her slaying.
"She asked for her mother," Ms. Slomer testified. "I kept saying, 'Demi, stay with me.' I kept trying to talk to her."
Demi died of her multiple stab wounds about 45 minutes later. Mr. Mullarkey survived his self-inflicted throat slashing and was hospitalized.
Following Ms. Slomer's testimony and that of a medic and a police guard who reported incriminating statements Mr. Mullarkey made at the hospital, District Judge Carla Swearingen ordered the boyfriend held for trial on homicide charges.
