Boitumelo "Tumi" McCallum Found Dead in New York University Apartment
By David Lohr
August 8, 2007
NEW YORK (Crime Library) — Authorities are investigating the death of Boitumelo "Tumi" McCallum, a 20-year-old woman whose badly decomposed body was found this weekend in her mother's Washington Square Village apartment.
On Sunday night a couple subletting the other bedroom of the two-bedroom apartment reported smelling a foul odor coming from Tumi's bedroom. When the building superintendent attempted to investigate the source of the odor, he found the door locked from the inside. Suspecting something was awry, he alerted the authorities to the situation.
Police officers arrived at the eighth-floor apartment around 10:00 p.m. The tenants stated that they had not seen Tumi since Wednesday, when she threw what neighbors described as a "wild party." Suspecting foul play, police officers entered the bedroom through an unlocked balcony window.
When police officers stepped inside the room, which according to ABClocal.go.com was littered with condom wrappers and beer bottles, they were overwhelmed by the stench of death. The source of the odor was quickly traced to some bedding sheets in a space between the bed and the wall. Upon closer investigation, the officers caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a body hidden within the soiled linens.

My daughter attends Mills College and is in the same class as Tumi. Going to Mills is such a life changing opportunity. My heart breaks for the family of this beautiful young lady. I'm just so sad that more and more we see what starts out as "love" turn into such a pitiful act of hatred. God bless us all.
As a poster here at CL, I'm not encouraged by the misinformation given out by the media. You would think that as journalists they would try to get the story straight. The newsday article says that Tumi is a NYU student. That is not true. She was on summer break from Mills College in CA. Classes are stating back up next week. The party was probably the last big hooray.

Michael Cordero Implicated in Boitumelo "Tumi" McCallum's Murder
By David Lohr
August 9, 2007
NEW YORK (Crime Library) — Police have apprehended 23-year-old Michael Cordero in connection with the death of his estranged girlfriend, Boitumelo "Tumi" McCallum, a 20-year-old woman whose badly decomposed body was found in her mother's Washington Square Village apartment on Sunday.
At approximately 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Cordero's relatives spotted him perched on the roof of his family's apartment building at West 62nd and Amsterdam. Police had been searching for Cordero since Monday, when he allegedly made statements to a friend, suggesting he knew something about Tumi's murder.
Concerned for his safety, Cordero's relatives quickly took the stairway to the roof, where they found him bleeding from his wrists. When they tried to approach him, Cordero ran down the stairway and out the front door of the building. Witnesses on the street called 9-1-1 after they watched Cordero — still bleeding — run down the street with his family in close pursuit.
The chase ended at West End Avenue and West 62nd Street, when Cordero ran into a Western Beef supermarket. Moments later, a uniformed officer arrived on the scene and took Cordero into custody. He was then transported to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was treated for self-inflicted wounds to his wrists. While in the emergency room, police say Cordero made statements to hospital workers, implicating himself in Tumi's murder.
According to a police spokesman, Cordero said, "I killed my girlfriend. I couldn't take it, so I tried to kill myself."

Woman Was Strangled, Medical Examiner Says

A 20-year-old woman whose body was found in a Greenwich Village apartment on Sunday was strangled and smothered with a towel, the medical examiner’s office ruled yesterday. Her boyfriend was charged with second-degree murder in the killing.
The developments came as the boyfriend, Michael A. Cordero, 23, remained under suicide watch yesterday after slitting his wrists on Tuesday.
Mr. Cordero tearfully confessed to hospital workers at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center late Tuesday that he had killed his girlfriend, Boitumelo McCallum, the police said. And hours before he cut his wrists, Mr. Cordero wept when friends asked him about his girlfriend, several of his friends said yesterday. ....... continued

What a piece of &%^@ that Michael Cordero is. Apparently If he couldn't have her, no one could. I'm glad he didnt succeed in taking his own life. Now he can face Tumi's family and her friends and than deal with the aftermath by the prison inmates, and go through the court process and hearing sad, horrible, heartfelt testimony, about what he did, and who he took from this world.
He'll get his in some form, someday.

MILLS COLLEGE ANNOUNCES THE BOITUMELO “TUMI” MCCALLUM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
MILLS COLLEGE
Newsroom
Oakland, CA - Mills College announced today the establishment of the Boitumelo “Tumi” McCallum Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship has been created to honor the life and accomplishments of Tumi McCallum, a 20-year-old student at Mills College whose life was tragically cut short by violence.
Known as a sweet, gentle, and intelligent young woman, Tumi was also a passionate advocate for social justice who had committed her life to building a better world. Mills Professor Julia Sudbury noted that “Tumi's early experiences as a young girl growing up in South Africa during apartheid greatly shaped her life and her commitment to racial justice.”
As an intern at Justice Now, an Oakland-based activist organization dedicated to “stopping violence against women and their imprisonment,” Tumi provided a lifeline to women in prison, advocating on their behalf to ensure they received essential services such as medical care. Tumi expressed to Justice Now staff members that she had found her life’s work.
The Boitumelo “Tumi” McCallum Memorial Scholarship has been created to provide opportunities for other young women to continue Tumi’s legacy of activism. Contributions to this fund will be used to award a scholarship in fall 2008 to a Mills College undergraduate student majoring in political, legal, and economic analysis (Tumi’s major) or in ethnic studies, where Tumi found passionate allies for justice. ...

The Life of Boitumelo “Tumi” McCallum
The Visions to Peace Project
August 10th, 2007
A message from Cassandra Shaylor at Justice Now, 8/9/2007:
It is with great sadness that we write to our allies and friends about the recent death of one of our former interns, Tumi McCallum. We hope to shine some light on the person Tumi was, particularly given the extremely limited discussion of her life in media coverage of her death.
Tumi came to Justice Now through a class she took with Julia Sudbury at Mills College. While working with us, she provided invaluable assistance to people in women’s prisons in a number of extremely important ways. As an advocate, she provided a vital lifeline to the outside for people in prison. She corresponded with people in women’s prisons facing severe and life-threatening medical problems, providing them with crucial information and advice. Even after completing her required hours for school credit, Tumi continued her work with Justice Now, far surpassing what was initially required.
Her commitment combined with her skills allowed her to take on more complex work. .....

Defendant in Student’s Death Was Jealous, Prosecutors Say
NEW YORK TIMES
By ANEMONA HARTOCOLLIS
Published: September 11, 2007
An unemployed and sometimes homeless security guard charged with strangling the daughter of New York University professors told investigators that he had been jealous because she invited other men but not him to her party, prosecutors said in court papers released yesterday.
Prosecutors said the homeless man, Michael Cordero, 23, made a videotaped statement in which he said that on Aug. 2, the night after the party, he had gone to the apartment in Greenwich Village where his girlfriend, Boitumelo McCallum, 20, was staying.
They argued and he choked her to death, according to prosecutors’ written account of the statement.
Then, as if they were breaking up, he took a pair of dog tags inscribed with their names and put it in one of her hands and wrapped a towel around her body, according to the prosecutors’ account.
Ms. McCallum had given him the dog tags for his birthday, he told investigators.
“He had called her during the party, and could hear that there were men at the party,” the prosecutors’ account says. .....

A Manhattan man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend in a NYU faculty apartment last month stuck a love trinket in her hand before he wrapped her in a sheet and left her dead on the floor of her bedroom, according to court papers filed yesterday.
Michael Cordero told cops that after choking Boitumelo (Tumi) McCallum to death, he hit her in the face and chest and wrapped a towel around her head and a sheet around her body until he remembered a pair of dog tags she had given him for his birthday.
Cordero told police he unwrapped the 20-year-old Mills College student and tucked the dog tags, inscribed with their names, into her hand before wrapping her up again. .....

He confessed to it. So why doesn't he be a man and plead guilty? Why can't he spare Tumi's family a little less grief on top of the pounds of heartbreak he has already caused them. Why? Because only cowards kill and cowards couldn't act righteous. :flamemad:

Family of slain student sets up scholarship fund in California
ASSOCIATED PRESS - 2:07 p.m. August 12, 2007
NEW YORK – The family of a college student found strangled to death and wrapped in a sheet has set up a scholarship fund in her honor at the California college she attended.
Teboho Moja, a New York University professor, said she appreciated the city's support after the grisly death of her 20-year-old daughter, Boitumelo McCallum, whose decomposed body was found a week ago in their Greenwich Village apartment. McCallum's ex-boyfriend has been charged in her death.

MA SLEEPS IN ROOM WHERE TUMI WAS SLAIN
nypost.com - By ANGELA MONTEFINISE
September 30, 2007 -- The bed is gone - the bed where Teboho Moja's daughter, Tumi McCallum, was found slain at the hands of her estranged boyfriend in August.
But Moja is sleeping in her daughter's room anyway.
"This is my home, and it's where my daughter departed," she said. "I feel close to her here. I feel her presence all the time. At first, the memories were so intense, and my imagination thought of what happened here. But I've made peace with that.
"It helps me say goodbye to be here," she added. "I feel I'm doing the right thing."
It's been a long journey home for the heartbroken NYU professor.
After spending most of August in her native South Africa, Moja pulled a fold-out couch into her 20-year-old daughter's room in their Greenwich Village apartment. .....

What is Deepwater testing for? To see if David Lohr can still post here? Well he/she already took care of his posting privileges so it can't be that.
Anyhow I thought Deepwaters function here was to get rid of spam - seems he/she can't even keep up with that -
