that was in NY and it was kitty genovese.

this one is in LA, happened in 1947.

Yes, his name is Steve Hodel. I just watched it. It's quite interesting. Steve Hodel was a detective, after his father, George Hodel died, he was given a small photo album. A couple of the pictures in the album resembled Elizabeth Short, which led him to what he thinks is evidence pointing to his father committing the crime.

Even though he believes his father committed the murder, there were some key pieces of evidence that cannot be labeled as irrefutable proof. 1) Experts cannot confirm one way or another if George Hodel's handwriting samples match that of the messages received from the killer, 2) The forensic artist states she is 85% sure the photos in Hodel's album are not of Short, and 3) there were at least 7 or 8 people in the list of suspects who were able to commit the crime (had surgical knowledge).

Unfortunately, most of the evidence from the case has been lost, so they may not be able to solve this crime ever. Which is a shame. Also, it came out that Short was not a prostitute, nor was she a famous actress. She was a nice girl, trying to make it in Hollywood.

I watched the show. The elder Hodel was a sick twist for sure. So, I can understand why his Son thinks he was the killer. There was some circumstantial evidence pointing towards him. And I do find it odd that he left the area after a supposed pay out to LE.

It was also interesting to hear just how corrupt LE was in those days. I don't think it's a coincidence that all the evidence for the case is missing.:rolleyes:

I looked the case up on the net after the show was over and there are autopsy photos online that are gruesome.:chicken:

The case will never be solved, IMO.

It wouldn't have taken a forensic expert to know that the pictures the younger Hodel believed to be Smart were not her at all.

1) Whether or not the photos in his father's album were of Elizabeth Short or not is utterly besides the point. Those photos were what started Steve Hodel on the investigation and they are NOT what his conclusions are based upon.

2) If you have read the BLACK DAHLIA AVENGER his very thorough, compelling and sourced treatise on the evidence which proves conclusively that his father was the killer of Elizabeth Short as well as other women in the area at the time, with and without his accomplice, then you understand why Stephen Kay, retired DA as well as others, believe the case is solved.

IMO, you only think it's still a mystery if you haven't read BDA.

If your knowledge of the case is based on 46 HRS/MYSTERY, please understand that that show covered only a tiny sliver of the evidence. BDA is a 500 page book replete with exhibits, photos, rich with evidence. It's an extremely convincing read.

Add to that, the additional info that has become available since the original publication, access to police files, the revelation that Dr. Hodel was the prime suspect at the time, before he fled the country.

Unless you've read all the literature available on the case, it is wreckless to make such a statement that the case has been solved by Steve Hodel. No offense but your post borders on obnoxious. I'm not saying his father isn't the killer, I'm simply saying that that other authors, such as John Gilmore in "Severed: The True Story Of The Black Dahlia Murder" make at least as compelling a case for the killer being a man by the name of Jack Anderson Wilson. Unfortunately I found the book to be a difficult read as it is based entirely on case files, interviews with some of the investigating detectives, and the writer's own recorded conversations with the suspected killer.
