Never before has our society had such insight into the criminal justice system. Let alone to a specific group of criminals and the heinous crimes committed.

Putting it all into perspective is difficult and using common sense despite what is made public. The task is often placed upon LE to provide answers, that simply don't exist.

So what is a Sex Offender in your honest view, well here is my take on them, and my realistic Theory and simple solution...

Before you read on, I'll save you the time if your not interested...."You can't hurt, what you can't see" Anotherwards, my solution for child predators (Class III as defined in Megan's Law)...Chemical Blindness.

(warning: you will not agree with some of my view points)

I honestly don't understand the root of these offenses, but in understanding them and how society is dealing with these crimes is disturbing.

For me, knowing the root of a crime, the mindset of the individual, and how a reoffense can be deterred is important. Also the uniformity of punishment, treatment and society acceptance.

Hearing about these crimes and doing nothing more than voicing vilgilanti remarks, unfortunately isn't doing the victims justice. Why these crimes (especially against children) are becoming more
prevalent is alarming. So what is working, what isn't? (Not in any specific order)

JMO (Not Working)

1. Social Abandonment/Rejection
2. Resident restrictions
3. Non-professional Treatment
4. Non-Uniformity in the Justice System
5. State Laws that vary to extremes
6. Sentencing Guidelines for Sex Crimes
7. Protection of our children (state & Federal)
8. Castration (Chemical or Otherwise)
9. Media or polictical gain through sex crimes
10. Education/Training/Public involvement

JMO (Working)

1. Sex Offender Registration
2. Public notification
3. Law Enforcement efforts (Nationwide)
4. Realistic laws that are applied correctly
5. Classification (there is a definite difference in levels)
6. Group therapy (with the options to be redeemed)
7. Information Technology
8. DNA (including databases)

Before I ramble on....give your input. I'll add to this if anyone cares to listen.

Right now, the truth is nothing works. We can never deal with a problem we don't understand, and we can never understand what we wish to ignore.

To answer your question, a sex offender is a person who has been convicted of a sexually-related or based crime (possession of illegal materials withstanding). That is all a sex offender is.

If we are talking about the people who are either sexually attracted to children or have sexual relations with children, things get a little more complex. I think the first thing we need to do is stop pretending that these people are sick, ill, or inherently evil and start admitting that for the bulk of human history people have been doing these sorts of things with virtually no restraint whatsoever. It's time to admit that these people probably make up a significant portion of our society, while some may do these acts simply out of opporunity or because it was previously done to them, most probably were born with those attractions.

While that may be uncomfortable to admit, the reality is we are seeing greater instances of these offenses because of a greater population, stricter rules on the interactions between adults and minors, and probably the perceptions caused by the laws themselves.

If we want to decrease the number of these instances, the first step is to actually understand what is going with these people. That cannot and will not happen if we continue with what we're doing.
