Investigative psychologist joins search for Tara Grinstead
By Angie Thompson
A former police officer who is now an investigative psychologist hopes his visit to Ocilla Thursday through Sunday will change the focus of the investigation into missing school teacher Tara Grinstead.
Dr. Maurice Godwin, President of Godwin Forensic Consultancy, of Fayetteville, N.C., said Monday he will apply aspects of psychological, geographical and environmental profiling during his visit to Ocilla in an effort to link people to specific locations around the time Grinstead went missing the weekend of Oct. 22.
The GBI has been okay, but this is a cold case now, Godwin said. It is about to become ice because it has been since October.
Godwin, who has written a number of books and journal articles on psychological, serial murder and geographical profiling, said he to use his profiling methods in order to try and link individual(s) to specific locations.
I will be doing a thorough search again of Taras home and trying to meet with certain people, Godwin said. The key to this in my professional opinion is cell phone records of certain people.
My main objective is to find new evidence that hasnt been found before.
Godwin explained that geographical profiling is using a special system to map where an offender might have been during the time of the disappearance.
Im seeking to take cell phone records and compare them with towers north and south of Ocilla using a method called triangularization, Godwin said. He said the method would pinpoint within 100 yards where a cell phone call as made.
Cell phone bills show calls made to and from the cell phone but not the tower records. With those records, Godwin said, someone is more able to pinpoint from what location cell phone calls are made and perhaps tell if someone lied about where they were when they made a certain cell phone call.
Grinstead was last seen Oct. 22 after helping contestants with the Miss Sweet Potato pageant in Fitzgerald and then attending a dinner at a friends home near Ocilla. She was reported missing two days later when she did not report to Irwin County High School, where she was a high school history teacher.
A massive search of Irwin County was held by law enforcement volunteers and Texas Equasearch. A $100,000 reward for her safe return and a separate $100,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of her possible kidnapper are offered. No clear evidence for either her location or the identity of anyone responsible for her disappearance has been found.
