Death Row is not a subject many people jump into with both feet. There are many misconceptions out there, misconceptions I held until I was enlightened. I'll kindly explain some things for those of us who don't know.
The inmates on The Row are segregated from the rest of the prison. This is solitary in that they have little contact with each other and are confined to their cells for hours each day. Solitary confinement is usually a punishment for various types of infractions and each prison is different on how this is administered.
Some sources:
Death Row: Confidential.- Bob Weinstein & Jim Bessent
Twenty-Thousand Years in Sing-Sing.- Lewis E. Lawes
Don Cabana,Former warden of Parchman prison.
Death Penalty Information Center.
Thanks. My conception pretty much was that each DR inmate is in the single cell. I didn't understand the comment about not being solitary confinement (which I DO understand would be "the hole") because they basically already are---forever and ever or until their execution date, whichever one comes first. ;)

I must have misunderstood one of the posts. Someone asked if he was in solitary confinement and I took that to mean in the hole. Of course DR inmates are confined to their own cells.
Who knew I'd have to clarify myself on something as obvious as this?
Does anyone need an in depth explaination of what exactly the hole is?
If you do, I highly suggest you keep that to yourself and quietly use something called Google.
Ice, I believe that you have misunderstood a bit more than just one post! No need to clarify yourself here......I think most have an indepth understanding of what death row means. Next time you misunderstand something someone says, take a closer look before you make rude remarks! It makes you look at bit ignorant.

This scumbag in southern CA in the 80's raped and killed several people. I am a little fuzzy as to how many, 14? and earned himself the moniker of the "Night Stalker" He terrorized LA and surrounding communities for months, police at first were hard pressed as to who he was as none of his victims lived tell about it till one night he broke into a home intent on raping a woman but she started screaming and he left. She gave a description to the police and they released a composite sketch to the media and if memory does serve me, a friend of his did think he resembled the drawing and was going to go to the police and a bunch of people saw him walking down a street and he looked so much like the guy they chased him down, somebody called the cops and before they could get there the mob went crazy on him. He was taken into custody and the woman ID him and he was consequently charged with all the other crimes as they did have fingerprints, and semen but no DNA as it did not exist as a science back then. He is truly a son of Satan, in some of the bodies he had carved pentagrams and the numeral 666. He often interrupted the trial yelling about Satan and satanic hand gestures, showed no remorse whatsoever and was found guilty on all charges and given a death sentence of which by my calculations, he has been on death row at least 20 years. This POS has sat on the taxpayers for the last 20 years, it is disgusting and deplorable. And what really galls me is how he was able to get married and have visits from his blushing bride who is just as warped as he is. But for her marrying him, that elevates her status among other death row loser groupies!!! She thinks he is a gentle soul, yah! Have to be in a visiting room full of CO's! This is an example of why I strongly protest death row inmates or child molesters or rapists of women and children can have pen pals. These maggots put themselves there and why should anyone give a crap if they are sad and lonely? How about their victims and their families? Do you know a Canadian based anti-death row militant group actually have web-sites set up for losers like Scott Peterson? I wrote them a scathing e-mail and voiced my disgust and asked them if they had thought about how the victims and families would feel that they get to post their rhetoric on these sites and how many more potential victims could result from this? Remind me of why I don't go through Canada when I go back to NE to visit? They wrote back and told me it was INHUMANE for them to have no HUMAN CONTACT! I wrote back and said you are kidding right? What about the families? What do they have? Is Laci Peterson's mother able to contact her daughter and grandson??? No, they go to a rock in a grave yard. This makes me sick!!!! Right after John Couey was sent to death row for raping and murdering 9 year old Jessie Lunsford, I wrote a letter to the state prison in FL voicing my disgust that he should not have any creature comforts beyond the basics. He is a maggot, a scumbag and he should have NOTHING but walls to stare at. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a letter back telling me exactly what he has and doesn't. He gets only one hot meal a day, a shower every other day, mail, one phone call a month, one book a week, writing materials and that is it. You have to buy the TV's there and they are only 13' B&W's and he can't afford one, there is no cable or AC, he can have canteen, but with no money he gets nothing!! Now this is the kinda time they all should serve. He was beyond redemption before he got there, so rehab is out of the question, with this puke it is all about punishment. I keep hoping they bring Old Sparky out of retirement just for him and he rides it all the way to hell! I wonder if San Quentin has cable and AC! If so, Son of Satan has it made! Entertainment and a wife and death row appeals that take over 20 years! You guys in CA need to contact Governor Arnold and complain!! This POS, what he did, and he gets rewarded by being able to marry, it is disgusting!
Amen, Reverend!!!!! I TOTALLY agree with everything you said here.

I had the same experience with a friend who was in prison in Wisconsin. I couldn't send him books directly -- I had to order them sent direct from the seller.
Yes, I understand a lot of stuff can be hidden in a book, but stuff could also be hidden inside the typewriter ribbon cartridge I WAS allowed to send him, to say nothing of the corrugated cardboard mailer I used. I did have to include the receipt with it, and you can be sure I crossed out my credit card number with a HEAVY black marker!
I'd agree that the Kodak paper probably has to do with some kind of regulation. Something else occurrs to me... this man has been in prison during the widespread introduction of the PC, digital camera, and high-resolution printers. A lot of stuff has passed him by!
I shudder in disgust at the realization of your last comment. eeeeeewwwwww.:flamemad:

So how long have you been getting letters from him? Why does he want pictures of women? You'd think he would have enough to keep him satisfied. What about his foot fetish?
I did time myself behind a bar fight that went very wrong. I also did time in administrative segregation(the hole). So to be honest, I can understand why he would want some photos. Imagine a cage the size of a small bathroom.(that is how he lives year in and year out.)
Before anyone assumes I feel sorry for him, I'll explain. He very much needs to be where he is. However, I would like to share with him what God did for me. I believe that God can (and does forgive any and all who ask) And of course this is my opinion. No offense intended.:seeya:

The scriptures (the Bible) says that there are two unforgiveable sins, and murder is one of them. As far as I know, R.R still rants and raves, that he chose Satan as his "Master," or God. I think he sticks to that, because his so-called-God doesn't require the things required by our one true God, for true repentance and forgiveness, which is guilt, sorrow, and a change of heart. He feels sorrow only for himself that he is in the hole. You deserve a pat on the back, and two thumbs up for doing things the "right way," and for finding your way with the Lord. Got another letter from RR. This time it was much longer and more details! This is good for my program of study for grad. school! I told him I was a teacher and he drew a picture for me to show my students. HA! It is a hand drawn pictures of Winnie the Pooh. My students would not appreciate that. I had a girlfriend take a few pictures of my feet with different color nail polish. I plan to send them next letter. My friend thinks I should send this avatar photo, but I said heck no! You can't really see my face up close, so maybe it wouldn't hurt. It's my birthday and I am celebrating this 3 day weekend!

Or, mix and match. A pic with one of your feet, with one of someone else's. Make it interesting, some with 2 right or left feet!!! A little variety, you know. Send pics with just one foot on each, and he could have a game of match-up!!!!
Why not go to an inter-net site and get some footprints of bigfoot! LOL!

Hi Dave, I'm not worried about him getting out and coming to get me, I am worried about someone getting my photo and putting it on the news or something......Then I could get fired from my job.
The siggy is a metaphor that I stole from the movie, "Beverly Hills Cop" with Eddie Murphy. He uses that line cuz he doesn't want the 2 cops following him to pull one over on him. He ofcourse is way too smart for that and that is the same way I feel........ It means nothing more, but I can see how it could be viewed the way you have viewed it. Not me at all!

Hi! I'm new. I have been trying to post for days, but for some reason my registration took forever to go through.....Very annoying. I have been a long time reader, though.
I actually looked up if "murder" is an unforgiveable sin. The bible says that the only 2 sins that are unforgiveable are:
1. never getting saved or accepting the lord
2. When given the choice to refuse the mark of the beast (666), and you take it anyway.
Unless RR has completely changed, and been saved it appears he will probably end up in hell. I agree with a lot of you. He is the scariest of all.....

This is what I found in the "King James version." I can't find anything about adultery, and murder. I am curious where you read that in the bible. Thank you for welcoming me to the forum. :) Have a great day.
Mark 3:29 which says:
"... whosoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit hath never forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin." (Revised Standard Version), or
"... he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation" (King James Version)

I also found this.....It's all so confusing. Isn't it?
Matthew 12
31And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. 32Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Sorry that I got off the subject. I just wondered if RR could be forgiven, and it just went from there. Pure curiosity.... I am not a "baiter." I have a sincere interest in serial killers (RR, in particular). The last thing I would be doing is coming here to start trouble with people.
As far as RR goes, I'll keep to the subject.

HI Johnna, welcome to CL where we have lots of fun! I believe Sara was not calling you the "baiter", but you may be the one with the religon! What ruins this thread so often seems to be ones that come here to personally attack some of us for our opinions. We like to throw around our opinions in a respectful way and it becomes cumbersome to try to deal with the RR fans who only seem to want to create arguments that can go nowhere!
I think it's cool that you came here and I hope to hear more of your opinions.
Maybe you could start your own thread about different religious beliefs...I'd certainly come visit!

Yes, yes, yes, I know all of that. I never said there were only two unforgiveable sins. The two I mentioned are the ones that people disobey the most. That is why I focused my attention to only those two. I served a mission for my church, and have taught these very principles. Thanks though, for pointing that out. :o

I am totally disgusted at R.R after watching on Youtube his pure arrogance in the court room. He thought himself as a celebrity, wearing sunglasses, and turning to his deranged "fans" flashing the peace sign. He would even turn towards the victim's families and taunt them!!!! What an ass!!! The thing that TOTALLY apalls me, is why is this puke still alive? What in the crap is keeping the justice system from granting his date with "ole sparky?" The victims of this monster should finally have their day of ridding the world of this implorable monster happen. IMO :cuss:

Florida was bent on killing Bundy, but even then, it was over a decade before that happened. Ramirez seems to have been overlooked in the bigger picture and the state is executing other people. I've always wanted to know how many serial killers reside on CA's death row alone.

For all the gas bagging you people do you obviously know nothing, for starters Texas has the highest rate of executions, so if you want to find out why,go and do some :read:. It costs much more to execute a person then it does to care for them for the rest of their lives, it cost millions of dollars, now why don't you all do some real reading and investigating instead of gossiping.

Richard Ramirez is definitely the ugliest serial killer who ever lived--a publisher of a Hispanic Newspaper in California stated that he should be executed just on the fact that he was too ugly to live---Ramirez right now is suffering from emphysema and lung cancer and doesn't have long to live as per SQV who is a poster on another board who visits her brother on Death Row frequently--Ramirez is struggling to breathe as we speak and thank God for that--I believe he also had most of his teeth torn out many years go in prison because, with his abnormal fear of dentists, he had just let his teeth rot away--During his infamous murders,Ramirez was in constant pain from his rotten smelly teeth--hopefully this rabid dog killer will soon drop dead and that now appears to be happening
I know this is an old post, but I thought it would bring amusement to those of us tossing around the idea of taking this fool out.

I'm not sure what the hold up is in CA, but several years ago during another CA case, there were 600+ in front of him on Death Row. Some of it might have to do with the enormous back-up in getting to the point where an appeal can be heard.
I have not kept up with who all has been executed there, but it seems they are slowly working up the line. The gang guy who wrote kids' books--Tookie or something, had been on DR for longer than RR, I think (but I won't bet the farm.) Whatever it is, CA does seem to be V-E-R-Y slow in even setting up executions, let alone carrying them out.

I agree GE. You can also add the added desire for their fifteen minutes of fame. RR is a the lowest form of a human being there is. Unfortunately our judicial system is such that him and others like him continue to breathe while their victims lie cold in their graves. Their families are forever scarred by their senseless murders.
RR continues to victimize but in a different way, that is being allowed to even communicate with anyone outside the prison walls. He is supposed to be on death row, why are these people still allowed to do this. Where is the justice for the victims? I find it sickening that they can marry and continue contact with anyone....Just my opinion...

I recently saw a program about five women with lovers/husbands in prison that was put together over a fair amount of time. I found it interesting that by the time the program was finished, two of the five had given up. It would be interesting to see some figures on how many of these so-called "relationships" fail. IMO these relationships will NEVER will be, or could be everlasting, because it is totally immoral, and dispicable (sp?) in the eyes of the Lord. History has taught that anything that is wrong, perverted, or evil, NEVER last, and ends at some point or another, sometimes tragically. Just like R.R brain washed wife who claims she will take her own life the day he is finally executed. _What?_??????? What a waste

Can he still be executed or is he in a permanent holding pattern?
Richard Ramirez was appealig his death sentence claiming that numerous errors were made during his trial. He claimed that he did not receive a fair trial yet he himself often put on shows for the jury during the trial and sentencing hearing. He even once called a guard over and showed him 2 photos of 2 of his murder victims. He showed no remorse. In August 2006 the Supreme Court upheld his sentence and said the death sentence would go ahead. You can go to this link to look for appeal updates
http://appellatecases.courtinfo.ca.gov/search/case/mainCaseScreen.cfm?dist=2&doc_id=982921&doc_no=B044368
I personally disagree with the death penalty but I won't shed any tears for Richard. Most of the people he killed were the breadwinners of their families and he left these families destitute and grief stricken scarring their children for life.

I wonder if he will ever be executed, he has been on DR for so long now.
Can he still be executed or is he in a permanent holding pattern?
Yes, he can be. IIRC, in earlier posts, his last appeal (meaning he ran out of appeals) was denied in 2006? Which means he is still on the execution list, CA just has to get on the ball and start executing them---don't know how many are on the list whose appeals have run out, or why the heck CA doesn't just start lining them up and getting the job done.

One alternative would be to transfer him to the general prison population. Historically, guys like him don't last very long under those conditions.

I'm with you on that one, i said the same thing on a post earlier, it was about child abuse, i said they should be branded on the forehead and then put in general population to see how long they last

Karin, One thing I have learned is how to recognize a troll and figure out that the troll just wants to bait and bash everyone on the thread and make them upset. In the mean time the moderator does not allow for this and shuts down the thread. it has happened to me more than you know and it was not pleasant. Well Karin and grneyes here is the absolute truth-
I truly believe that Karin is a much more good hearted person than you and I grneyes. Maybe it is what she has gone through or not and her place in life now. SV, about a thousand years ago I grew up on the Northwestern Fringes of the "Mormon Corridor," so believe me, I know your situation! You can tell people all about it, but only someone who has actually lived in that region has a real inkling of what it means . Take care, and we won't abandon you!
Anyway, back to the subject of this particular thread, the other infuriating thing about Ramirez is that he's under protection at taxpayers' expense. He knows he can mock the families of his victims because they cannot touch him. :flamemad:
I do remember back to when he was hunted down practically by an entire neighborhood, and someone who will forever be a hero in my book was beating him with a metal fence post; he wasn't cocky, he wasn't mocking anyone, he was experiencing unmitigated terror (and hopefully a lot of physical pain). The sheriff's deputies who arrived on the scene actually had to protect him from the mob of outraged citizens.
It would be really nice to see him experience some of that terror again...

YES!!!!!!! someone knows my real pain, and that I am not having a pity party about being single in this state!!! Thanks for the comfort of you my friends being there!!!!
Yes, about that good 'fer nothin' R.R....I remember watching a t.v. special they did on R.R, and the thing that stuck in my mind, was when some lady recognized him as he tried to get on a bus, and screamed it was the "night stalker." Other people started following him, until it was a huge mob. If I remember right, they chased him until he was cornered, and they just beat the living snot out of him. I think that if I was also in that crowd, and I knew For SURE that it was him, I think I might have cheered on the crowd. As far as participating, I dunno. I have never been in a real fight before in my life (my brothers used to give me Indian underwear, and stuff like that. but we NEVER hit each other - at least from what I can remember). I probably would have sat on him until the police came or something. But if the crowd did kill him, I think (or hope) it would be looked on as justice. It is disgusting that California is dragging it's feet with everything that seems to be of "better importance." Why not just line up all of the idiots on death row, and we could all have our own B.BQue party outside the gates? It would one, give the victims families closure, and two, bring this rediculous R.R female follower thang to an end! Yee haw!!!! :D

SV I've never lived in a Mormon area but I do live in a town that is 99% Catholic and I'm about as far from being a Catholic as you can get. *lol* Me and my dh are definite outcast here not only because of not being Catholic but because we aren't related to anyone here and my being an American doesn't really help either. If you have family around you then that really helps because we only have my youngest son nearby who we don't get to see often because of work schedules, so we (me and dh) really only have each other to talk to face to face. I live in the burbs of Atlanta and the cultural diversity has an impact on how we all interact...feel the need to acquire a second language..
I don't think poor health changes the process for lethal injection...I just don't believe the courts are very close to even starting some of his remaining appeals. His defense was handled so shabbily that he will probably spend 10 more years having his case examined before they kill him...

The only thing that the state of California, or the main executioner should be thinking, is "let's end this miserable stinking life form, that took soooo many innocent lives so very violently." Not "let's keep him alive; to kill him would be MEAN!!!!" We need someone with some cahonies to speed up the process. I don't know if "Ahnuld," the Govenator, has anything to do with the process, but maybe someone like him.

Yes, I did!!!!! Tom Hanks was PERFECT for that role, as was Michael Clark Duncan. I served a mission for my church in the New Hampshire Manchester Mission. The area included Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. In Bangor Maine, is Stephen King's house. I have seen it, and well, it is interesting. He has a gargantuon house of course, with a cast iron fence around it with gargoyles on it. He even has on his front door, those big huge round iron knockers on it. Probably all for show...who knows. The community all said he is a great guy, and gives alot to the community. As far as his books and movies go, he is too wierd and freaky form me. The only movies I have seen, was Misery (Kathy Bates will NEVER be the same for me again) and of course, the Green Mile, which was allot better. :D

I've been hooked on King ever since I read Carrie when it first hit the shelves. Scary books/movies don't bother me too often though I don't like to watch horror movies alone in the dark anymore. *lol*

I've got the books too. I just love them. Stephen King has always been one of my favorite authors though and that one was his best I think.
I loved that one but also one of his first where they all get a virus and only a few survive and the book "IT" was good. I loved it when he starred in his own shows.

Do you mean The Stand or one of the others? I've noticed he has a new one out so I'm hoping dh will get it for me for xmas.
Did you read the Dark Tower series? The first few books are kind of hard to get into but they get better as it goes and then kinda loses a bit in the last couple.... But I still enjoyed the series.
I will come watch them with you grneyes
How do you like your popcorn? :D
Even with all the creepy books King wrote, he never compared to the horror of a real live RR though. *shiver*

The one you speak of about the virus might be one worth checking out. I did see Carrie at some Halloween party back in high school. It was freaky. I mainly remember that John Travolta (Danny Zuko a total hottie then) was in it.
What is the title of the virus one? Was it the stand like grneyes says? "It" gave me nightmares. Since then I have hated clowns. Reading the gross story of John Wayne Gacey made me think of "it." he was a BIG it. (haha) Anyone remember Goonies, with Chunk and Slaw? hahaha love that one......

hello im a newbie ,this post are very interesting
Welcome to the board SUSYDAHMER
I do NOT watch horror or scary movies. I did read Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon, and regret every minute of it!! lol Just hard to put down. Would only read them if my nephew was in the house, tho.
My kids have loved to watch Chuckie and Elm Street and all sorts of horror movies, and DD got hooked on Stephen King by the books my nephew left behind.
I was totally surprised the other day when she said "Wizard of Oz" the regular movie, scared her to death!!!! HUH????? After watching all that other?
I do more true crime reading and watching. Like grneyes says, real life can be scarier than some of the fiction. RR, the Green River Killer, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacie (altho I never watched the horror movie about the clowns.)

I agree. No S.K. book can compare to reality.
I salute you Stephen, you're literary genius.:patriot:

I just saw this grneyes. The Stand is the one that started me on Stephen King. and I do like Dark Tower. Not as much as the regular books though. I like my popcorn buttery with no salts. It will take me 6 hours to get there.
yes reading the R.R. gives me chills just like a scarey movie. It is the only serial killer book I have kept. I mean talk about not having morals. And if we lived there it could have been us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IMO

This was all I could find. It says he was found guilty of 13 murders but it does not go into specifics about the penalty for each count.

Ugh, disgusting. IMO he should have recieved a death sentence for all 13. I have wondered if the number of death sentences a person receives would put him/her at the top of the execution list. They seem to be taking their sweet time on this case.

It only states one.....but, it says he was convicted of 13 slayings . That's weird. I guess, they just wanted to get him on there????

Oh my freaking piece of crap....you would think they would take him right to the death chamber, and do it right then and there with the families already there. Too many stupid laws, and regulations get in the way for this creep, that doesn't deserve to have the sun shine on his dog ugly butt. :cuss:

Hi SV, because his trial was incompetent with the mistakes his lawyers made, he will probably die of natural causes before they stick the needle in his veins....Plus California doesn't really like to execute people. We wait and we will see...don't hold your breath though!

Yea, too bad we can't transfer R.R to Texas, while playing "Taking Care Of Business" over and over to him, till he gets there. :cuss:

Well I happen to think RR is a POS.
I am sure his family had a lot to do with corrupting his mind with murder and violence, but the responsibility falls into the lap of the individual IMO.
There was a poster here ( I do not recall who), who stated that the 1st thing he wanted was pictures of her in her bikini. To me that sounds like someone who is arrogant, distasteful, and maybe just a tad unfailthful to their wife.

Yea, I TOTALLY agree that R.R is a POS. I still stand by my statement that it is too bad we can't transfer R.R to Texas, while playing "Taking Care Of Business" over and over to him, till he gets there. If California doesn't have the laws, or even the slightest dsire to rid themselves of a murdering vagrant,. then let Texas take care of business!!!!
